My friend wants to build his own computer for $600, good enough for gaming. Gerv ..?[/quote:4a83a]

Has he any parts he can reuse like case, psu, ram or monitor?

If he has all the above you could make something prety decent for $600, if its all from scratch though i doubt you'd get much for $600 in terms of running games at aceptablefps\image quality settings.

$588.47 for the above not including shipping. Not amazing in spec terms but no too bad considering its under $600.

Jin-Roh 03-21-2006 09:04 PM

Thanks, one point - he mostly plays WoW, that's about it.

geRV 03-21-2006 09:07 PM

Ive no clue about whats required to run wow, never played it or tried it. Prolly better asking akuma i think hes into that game.

Forte 03-21-2006 09:31 PM

need some tips on converting fraps videos into .wmv files, or compressing them to an acceptable size? I tried using windows movie maker and it made the video turn into an acid trip.
edit: nvm, d/ling virtualdub so I can compress to a different format.

Heres a good upgrade for agp users

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30502

7800gt on the agp format happy:

Jin-Roh 03-23-2006 12:29 PM

So Gainward = good, but not available in N. America?

geRV 03-23-2006 12:34 PM

Its good becuase this is hands down the fastest card available on the agp format. More than likely others will follow as the agp instal base is massive compared to pci express.

I was looking at the 939's but honestly. . .I couldnt see much different other than this LCACHE business - although they do have a Mobo/Cpu in the same flavor but 939's. 50 bucks extra. Just dont know (or care I guess) what I'd be getting for that extra 50 (plus tax).

9mm BeRetTa 03-23-2006 04:43 PM

I don't think that Mobo you selected has PCI Express. Your vid card is PCI-E.

I'd go SLI with the mobo personally, but thatll be another $100.

Yup no pci express. better of going 939 socket and getting an nforce 4 mobo.

9mm BeRetTa 03-23-2006 05:32 PM

Oh, and I just realized both the CPU and Mobo you selected are refurbished. Not sure if you wanted that, or just made a mistake.

TGB! 03-23-2006 05:35 PM

Blargh - didnt see that. THAT would have been fucked up.

How about this -

socket 754 annoy:

9mm BeRetTa 03-24-2006 12:36 PM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103537 CPU - $12 more.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128268 939 Nforce 4 Mobo $25 more.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820227039 DC RAM - $10 less with rebate.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130283 Vid Card - $60 less with rebate.

Total combo of all the above = $33 less than what you put. And the 939 socket Gerv suggested and CPU you wanted. I don't know the gigabyte co. who makes the mobo, I just selected it cause I think you want something cheap. The vid card I dunno what the difference is between that and what you selected. As far as I can tell its only a little slower core clock by like 20hz. Ram I don't know. I bought OCZ with my PC and its worked good so far. Maybe Gerv would know.

I'm just bored so I figured I'd take a stab at configuring a cheaper PC.

Hmmm - thats an interesting build. . .I just want something fucking fast. Not Forte "I have 400 dollars to blow on a CPU fast" - but something where I can fire up most games that arent named FEAR and play them on high settings and have it look good doing it.

Forte 03-25-2006 10:21 AM

oOo: .....

question. every time I make a movie in windows movie maker, it turns into some acid trip for my screen. I am taking fraps videos that I have recorded and putting them into windows movie maker, then saving the file as the largest size possible. you guys eer heard of anythng like this?

edit: problem solved, turns out it was windows media player that had the problems. oOo:

Stammer 03-26-2006 08:15 AM

For God-knows what reason my computer does two things which are starting to drive me a little crazy.

1) It randomly black screens and resets itself, the moniter never comes back on and the only way to get any picture back is to hit the reset button but somtimes that doesn't even work so you have to flat out shut it off and turn it back on to get it working again.

2) I lose my internet connection, I'm connected to a network and I've checked to see if the server was reset, or the internet went down or if I was just unplugged from the network. No, none of these are the case, I'll lose my internet connection but the computer in the next room will be doing just fine. And the only remedy for this is to reset my computer.

Edit: I also noticed that I lose my connection to the internet most often when I'm using Limewire or Azureus.

elstatec 03-26-2006 10:45 AM

aight bitches just about to buy this system right now and ive checked as much as i can to see any compatibility errors/issues but it seems all good, so give it a double going over for me and you can

Ive heard sapphire video cards are shitty....I dunno maybe I heard wrong

geRV 03-26-2006 11:32 AM

The built by ati cards are made by sapphire, no difference in quality at all.

When you get the gto 2 make sure its the proper gto 2. Sapphire have been shiping some regular gto's in gto 2 boxes for some reason.

The standard gto has a blue pcb and no pci-e power conector on it. The one you want is this one:

What psu are you ordering for the setup?

elstatec 03-26-2006 11:55 AM

its the antec 450w SmartPower2.0 that coems with the sonata 2 case.
