It would run it fine for windows etc, games would struggle at the monitors native res though. Probably better off getting a more upto date system instead of going for a bigger monitor.

ugh, i figured someone would say that - no sense in getting a new monitor when i havent upgrade in 5 years...what do you think i could get for the $500 that i would have spent on the monitor? i already have a CRT, i just need a mobo, cpu, ram. how much of a stretch would my Radeon 9800 be if i wanted to play HL2, BF2, FEAR,etc? would i need a new vid card? i could possible toss in an extra $200. damn, its been too long - i havent followed the newer stuff lately, i dunno what i should get for my money..

Short Hand 04-11-2006 12:47 AM

my 9800AiW runs HL2 perfectly....... HDR.. or HDL lighting ?? maxed @ 1600x1200....

so far how does it look?

9mm BeRetTa 04-11-2006 01:58 PM

Looks good.

I'd go for dual channel ram though

Madmartagen 04-11-2006 03:50 PM

thx for the links, my main concern isnt necessarily the price, the choices you picked were a bit out of my range, although i havent factored in that i have a monitor, speakers etc. i just need

RAM
mobo
CPU

i have an 80gb RAID using a modified IDE card. these HDs are circa 2002 and so they dont have the extra buffer, all i know is that there are to 40gb 7200rpm EIDE drives. is it proper to assume i will need a new RAID as well if im going to get a mobo that has DDR RAM, is faster and has more capabilities?

how do you know which components will function properly with eachother? thats the hardest thing for me to understand...
thx for the replies fellas.

Lot of motherboards have built in raid functions, if it runs off a raid card then it should install in the new mobo with no problem.

Depends on the amount you're willing to spend on a card.

I was thinking about that. My question is: Is 2x 512 faster than 1 gB?

Stammer 04-16-2006 10:55 AM

I need to upgrade my mobo and video card, and I'm having some trouble.

So far this video card seems pretty good...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814143050

but now I need help finding a good socket 775 mobo that supports pci-e and a bonus would be if t supported agp also.

I believe so, but there could be some more expensive 1GB sticks that are faster than 2 cheap 512s. Probably depends on the brand/price range.

Madmartagen 04-22-2006 12:06 PM

is this a good vid card and a good price? the micro center store has a $50 mail in rebate, so it comes out to about $150. im thinkng of buying it as a part of my upgrade...

Its a pci express card, does your board have that capability

geRV 04-22-2006 01:17 PM

Tis agood card though, but its starting to be surpassed by cards with sm3.0 functionality.

Madmartagen 04-22-2006 01:39 PM

no pci express on my board, but i do want to upgrade. is pci better than agp?

geRV 04-22-2006 02:56 PM

Pci express is the new graphics card slot (amongst other things in the future). Hard to buy a mobo now that doesn't have a pci express slot on it, Also all the high end cards are pci express only as agp is getting phased out.

As far as im aware its about the same speed as the x850 series bu with sm 3.0 etc. Theres good deals going on 256mb x1800xt's at the minute which is a better card.

gtboys34 04-29-2006 08:22 PM

[quote:4571d]What we see is that in 1280x1024, where we did not manage to test the GeForce 7900 quad SLI[/quote:4571d]

Never ran that part of the test for some reason. Seems to be quite afew problems with it as well

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/ ... li_10.html

Quad sli is just a pretty dumb setup, you;re losing 150mhz off each gpu which makes for 600mhz total loss. Not even sure if the memory runs at its proper 7900gtx speeds. Pretty funny to see regular sli and regular crossfire smacking it around in some benchmarks, other times quad sli has a pretty big lead over them or a retarded 10-15fps lead over them. annoy:
