Nyck, does your dell have the plastic handle type thing on the ram also? I thought that was really handy when I was changing my RAM config.

Jin-Roh 05-21-2006 05:55 PM

My brother is looking for a really good computer for under $3,000. Mostly just for a lot of media and low-level gaming. What's the best place to get laptops from?

Vance 05-21-2006 06:21 PM

Nyck, I have the XPS 400 as well, damn good machine.

gtboys34 05-24-2006 11:00 PM

(?>all) does upgrading the bios really allow the system to perform better?

also, which is better and why in terms of performance, pci video card or an agp card? I've noticed that pci-e tend to be more expensive than agp cards and just wanted to know exactly why that was..

btw, jin roh, check around ebay and newegg

bios probably wont change anything performance wise. when it comes to BIOS I say if it aint broke dont fix it. you can fuck up your pc HARDCORE if you fuck up a bios update.

PCI express works better than a agp, it has more speed but you need an actual pci express slot not just PCI and there is x16(good) x1(suck)

vid cards right now PCIe > AGP > PCI

Okay so I played bf2 again and I need new ram My shit was raped

I have a gig now(it sucks 1x512 2x256)

I'm looking for at least 2 gigs 2x1GB That is $225 or less.

My system takes pc3200 I have 2700 in there now(I think the 512 may be 3200 so that would give me 3 for 2.5 gigs

I see some decent deals

Is ATi and nVidia releasing any new cards soon? I might need a new computer seeing as mine doesn't work and don't think it will.

geRV 06-02-2006 11:24 AM

Probably later this year around nov\dec the g80 and r600 will be around.

Nyck 06-02-2006 11:33 AM

Any idea how much better they will be compared to the top of the line at the moment?

geRV 06-02-2006 12:22 PM

Dunno r600 is a unified pipeline approach like the gpu thats in the xbox 360, the g80 is only doing this partially from the info floating about.

Id say becaus eof the r600 being totally unified it should have an advantage over the g80.

Got my xifi in the post today, rock:

Was never a big whore for sound but jesus christ, after playing bf2 for a few minutes the difference is mad, everything has a ton more punch to it, artilllery went off beside me and near blew my ears off. Mp3's sound a shit load better as well. Think i neded a new sound card though, after having my sonic fury for near 5 years. beer: Little front ports handy as hell as well, also came with a pair of creative gaming headphones which are pretty good.

£140 so about $263, not much in it i spose. Then again the headphones are worth £30 or so.

gtboys34 06-03-2006 06:38 PM

what are some of the advantages and disadvantages (if any) of using a dual hdd set up? Im thinking about doing it but i already have a 150 gb hd and it's quite fast. If i were to get 2, would file r/w and allocation become faster or something?

Madmartagen 06-04-2006 11:26 AM

nope. try checking around your firefox folder for it. is they are there, download a program called mobackup so that you dont lose them again

gtboys34 06-06-2006 07:01 PM

gerv, gerv, gerv... wtf is this thing? LOL, steroids has entered the gaming field folks

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/06/05/ ... _7950_gx2/

can you imagine running 2 of these bad boys in quad sli?? There is NO game that is out or due out this YR or next for that matter, that will do these cards justice.. imo

geRV 06-06-2006 08:30 PM

Quad sli's a joke, unstable as fuck and not to mention 2 x1900's in crossfire were beating it in some benchmarks, for a 4 card setup to be spanked by a 2 card setup in ANY game is laughable.

gtboys34 06-06-2006 08:39 PM

whats makes it so unstable? psu, cooling etc??

geRV 06-06-2006 08:42 PM

Probably the drivers, nvidia have released those 7950's but not the software to have them in quad sli untill they get all the bugs worked out.

gtboys34 06-06-2006 09:41 PM

so when they fix the bugs, you still won't be buying (considering atleast) this card? I know it cost's about 600 bucks but wouldn't you love to own one or are you satisified with just having those 2 x1900 running on crossfire?

geRV 06-06-2006 09:42 PM

Ive only 1 x1900, at the minute anyway. Not considering any new cards till dx 10, or if i decide to add a second x1900.

gtboys34 06-06-2006 09:44 PM

so can you post your 3dmark test results or just tell me what you're running on games like cod 2, bf2, doom, quake fear or any of the fps that require alot of power?

geRV 06-07-2006 04:09 AM

Games like bf2, cod 2 etc i can run full settings, 1680x1050 16x aniso 6x anti aliasing. Hard to say what kind of fps im getting since it depends on whats going on in the game unless its an older game you're not gonna get a constant framerate with everything up full. You see some people saying shit like "omg im getting 60fps all the time", bullshit, theres always gonna be situations where your framerate will drop especially with one card, even dual cards bf2 can drop to 20 odd fps.

Bf2 in some cases can drop to 20 odd fps, but thats with adaptive anti aliasing and in maps with a load of foliage and me right in the middle of it. Adaptive aa means anything thats 2d like the grass textures is being smoothed out and since thers a load of it the you take a bigger fps hit.

Ill do 3d mark tomorrow, think it'l be around 6k.
