Actually, earlier rap artists were considered "urban poets", before this gangster subculture began infesting it with glorifications of gang activity and perfanity. hake:[/quote:9dcd1]
Exactly. And it still is very much Urban Poetry. You just need to listen to the likes of:
Mission, People Under The Stairs (Sig), The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Masterminds, Lone Catalysts, Killah Priest, KrumbSnatcha, Jeru The Damaja, Group Home, and then some......
People need to get past the mainstream gangster rap sub-genre, if they want to understand real hiphop. But most people would rather judge things for face value.
You'll often find, that the same people who judge HipHop on face value, are the same people calling Black people "Niggers" to their other white friends.......Or Crossing the street when they see somebody with black skin walking towards them.
They can't stand that there is a genre dominated by Black People that are making shitloads of money. Anti-Semitistic, Shit-Slobbers.
Namely: Butch. This infidel is an ignorant, poo-faced git, and needs to seriously grow-the-fuck-up, because what he thinks is mature, is actually far from mature.
I leave you with a quote:
