Well if he was there for 5 days you can expect that he was pretty tired. Try staying in one spot for 5 days with little food and water. So he could have been so fatigued that he might not have felt pain as a normal person would have.

Personally I think I am to much of a chicken shit to cut my own arm off, but I might if the situation arose.

1) 800lbs. boulder falling on his arm. It crushed all the bones, muscles, and most importantly nerves. It hurt but he was spared a ton of pain.
2) no water for 2 days, he had maybe 8 hours left to live no matter what
3) He was alone
4)If he was gonna die, it would have happened already from shock, he didnt die.
5) HE had a knife and was willing to lose a limd for a life.
6) hes a mountain climber, he risks his neck everytime he does it.
The guys got more tha nbig balls, his are made of granite. I would probably have cut my arm off. Knowing me It would be as I died of dehydration.

like the article said, the boulder crushed his arm. So, when he cut his arm, he basically had to cut through tissue and not much bone since it was already broken. YES, that would be painful, but not as much as you would think in my opinion.
