In the RN it's easy because we don't have so many rating ranks.

Able Seaman
Leading Seaman
Petty Officer
Chief Petty Officer
Warrant Officer

my dad was a Commander. If he hadn't retired, he would be making Cpt. right about now.

YOU'RE A LOT OF HELP YOU LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATORS!!!

now let the old Gunny explain it:

you got your E-1, that's called a seaman recruit,
an E-2 is a Seaman Apprentice
an E-3 is a Seaman
an E-4 is called Petty Officer 3rd class,
E-5 is Petty Officer 2nd and E-6 is Petty Officer 1st,
an E-7 is a Chief Petty Officer,
an E-8 is a Senior Chief Petty Officer,
an E-9 is a Master Chief Petty Officer,
finally we have the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, there's only one of those.

COME BACK HERE! WE'RE NOT DONE YET!

now for the officers:

O-1 is an Ensign,
O-2 is a Lieutenant (junior grade)
O-3 is a Lieutenant (senior grade)
then we have a Lieutenant Commander, followed by Commander,
the next rank is Captain, this is confusing because the Navy Captain is an O-6, equivalent to an Army ot Marine Colonel, wheras the Army/Marine Captain is only an O-3, or a Navy Lt. (SG)

O-7 and O-8 are Rear Admiral "upper half" and "lower half",
O-9 is a Vice Admiral,
O-10 is a Fleet Admiral,
and O-11 is the Admiral of the Navy, the five star Admiral was a wartime only rank, in WWII Admirals Chester W. Nimitz and Earnest J. King were 5-stars, never again did we have a five-star admiral.

Now I hope that answered your questions,
until the next Mail Call, Semper Fi, Carry On! *salutes and drives off in jeep*
