The right to have a gun in the US is not about defending ourselves, it is about being able to overthrow the government if they begin to not represent us how they should. Our founding fathers would not like how the situation has turned out though. According to them, we all should all be able to own an m1 abrams and automatic weapons. Most of the country has forgotten about this. We have been lucky enough to have a very stable government for the past 200 years, some countries go through a government every few months (italy I believe is one), France has had their share of them also. In this day and age, we will probly never be able to topple the gov if it gets out of hand, and that is a scary thought.

Even though I own two guns, I don't think anyone should have a gun.

The constitutional right to bear arms allows us to keep firearms for self defense, raising a militia if needed, hunting and for sport. I dont think the founding fathers could possible fathom the destructive firepower we have today, so i would think they would be aghast if they saw citizens keeping assault rifles just for the mere sake of having them. As for the overthrow of corrupt governments i agree to an extent. if we were to be invaded by a neighboring country, the fact that many of the civilians are armed would make it much more difficult for them to supress us. most of what our Continental Army consisted of were farmers and laborers who had a rifle. Besides, if any president or politician tried to take control, the people wouldnt stand for it and i dont think the army and police would either.

I'm in agreement with most of what Madmartagen said....except the part about our founding fathers being against it now. I for one believe in the 2nd amemdment (A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed). It's our "right" to bear arms, you're not forced to do so. As for having a background check, i believe it's a good idea. The person shouldn't have a felony record, a mental history, and they should be fingerprinted.
I own 3 firearms and carry one most all the time. When it's not feasable to carry, i'm armed with a knife. I always have some sort of defensive weapon on me. I'll be dammed if i just stood by as someone tried to harm me or a member of my family. |
