First of all, so I don't derail this thread, RIP to those who died at Auschwitz. There's a special place in hell for those who committed the worst atrocities our generation has ever seen.

I'm both a Christian and a conservative. I'm tired of being generalized and lumped in with a small portion of right-wing extremists. That line of thinking makes you guilty of some of the same things you accuse the "christian conservatives" of. I'm talking about fear-mongering, stereotyping and witch hunting. Wake up and smell reality; fractional portions of society recieve the most attention because they are DIFFERENT. For example: right-wing christian extremists, left-wing environmentalists, muslim sects (sunni etc.) associated with terrorism... the list goes on and on. These are merely recent examples; look back at history and note that those who's opinions and standards are different from whats generally accepted stand out.

I'll stop myself from rambling now, but my point is this: Lumping Christians together as "the new evil" is just as bad if not worse than what some extreme examples of Christians are doing today.

People tend to forget about the "others". From watching TV today you'd think it was only Jews that had died. rolleyes:

Holy shit, excuse me. I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to not take a day out of week to express my sadness for those who have died. Just because the holocaust isn't a major concern to me doesn't mean I don't think it happened or I don't care that we went to war and stopped it. Sorry I didn't put RIP at the end of my post..

Everyone knows about the holocaust, i dont see why we need to have a commemoration, remembrance or any other shit every single year that goes by. The survivors need to move along and their kids need to use the fortune their parents gave them to make something out of their lives that doesnt require the rest of the world to make a fat boohoo for them. There were 20 million Chinese who died and another 10 or 15 million Soviets who died too.

Well, if we don't recognise one of these events, how will we learn for the future?

P.S Why do you think everyone knows about the holocaust? ....And don't say movies because we can't rely on those too teach us what is right and wrong.

As long as we continue to write the history books and as long as those documentaries are coming out, the world will never forget what happened in WW2. Nazism is synonomous with mass genocide and Auschwitz. The very very few ignorant people out there are in denial about it. The vast majority knows what happened and so future generations are pretty much guaranteed to be educated about it. Movies actually do influence people; Schindlers List immortalized what happened, and will most certainly become one of the classic movies shown over again in the future.

I dont mean to take light of the events that happened, but this is so OFN by now, i find it boring to see how the subject is brought out in every single subject. It isnt about genocide anymore, its strictly about how the poor Jews were brutalized and what can we as a society do to ensure they get their 15 minutes every year. Its just as much PR as having those advertisements with the white, latin, black and asian kids for the Boys and Girls club. They (jews) have had generations to move on, they have their own country, they have museums and support groups to make everyone remember. I think they need to get over it already.

Dude.....Not cool. These people are still alive. I could understand what you were saying if there were no Holocaust survivors still alive, but the events are still directly effecting people, and quite frankly you have absolutely no right to tell them to "get over it already."

It's really as simple as that. That's why the day of remembrance remains. I personally associate the holocaust with a warning about blindly following a leader. It's a perfect example of what happens when you do that. I can't think, off the top of my head, of any other atrocity against humanity that illustrates that point better.
It teaches us to be cynical of those which otherwise would lead us to our downfall, no matter how charming or charasmatic they are.

Madmartagen 01-27-2005 11:30 PM

ok the term 'get over it' wasnt cool and was harsh. the main thing im trying to say is that they shouldnt get this much attention after the war when so many more were violated. Where is the sympathy for the Chinese and other people of S Asia? Japan hasnt made any formal apologies for what they did, but instead try to stir sympathy for themselves because the US dropped two atomic bombs on them. I think the Jews should grieve for what happend, but the rest of the world needs to focus elsewhere.
