Wrong. One reason he was able to get away is that all Atlanta Police, except for the court Deputies must turn in their guns when they enter the courthouse.

The easiest solution is to not leave a guy that used to play linebacker in college (210 pounds, btw) alone in a room with one smaller female Deputy. Especially a guy that the day before had been caught hiding two steel shanks in his socks.

Yep, I woulda hated to been trying to get home at rush hour this afternoon. By the way, tonight my wife and I ran into a lady that my wife knows who works in the Cobb County court. She said that in Cobb the Deputies wear a ring-like thing that matches up to their gun. Each ring is specific to their gun so that they are the only ones who can fire it. Mighta saved some lives if they had that in Fulton.

yeah good point-i remeber seing something about that-like an an Channel 2 I-team investigation-, but remember that Cobb County is also giving all their students laptops next year. You know how Fulton Co. Sherrifs has been lately too, all that money that was taken/given to criminals and stuff.

If there were no guns, no one would be dead right now. Without the gun the man could have been tackled by others.

I have a comment/opinion on what transpired. From what they're telling us, the suspect was brought before the judge charged with rape. Thats a serious crime which carries a hefty sentence. The suspect took advantage of a situation that, in my opinion, was helped caused by societies way of thinking. We all know the phrase: "Innocent before proven guilty in a court of law". It's just that, that may have contributed to what transpired this morning. This "innocent" man was brought before the court charged with a "violent" crime of rape. He undoubtly was not handcuffed while in the courthouse since the image of him being handcuffed may sway the court to believe he's guilty. He overpowered the only armed person in the room (Deputy Sheriff} and took the gun away, shooting the deputy in the process. Had the suspect been restraint in the 1st place (perhaps less visible leg irons), perhaps this killing never happens. The suspect took advantage of a "weak link" in custody and acted on it. I'm sure procedure in handling future suspects in that county will change........and for good reason i might add.

I think it's time we do away with "image" and worry about safety first. If EVERYONE was brought before the judge with restraints (even a DWI), then perhaps the stereo-typing won't be a factor when it comes time to determine guilt. This is only my opinion, and until someone else comes up with a better solution, i'm sticking to mine. (...and don't even suggest the Deputy be unarmed unless the court house is set up inside a prison where the suspect has no way of escaping once he decides to make a run for it.)

....on another thought, perhaps we have an unarmed court officer handling the suspect while an armed officer stands at the door? At least he'll have time to draw down on the suspect if he charges the door. I dunno.......thoughts??

a convict got away maybe 2 years ago, he was at the court house going into his trial, and he managed to slip away, they found him like 4 hours later hiding under a deck... i dont think he was a dangerous offender though so meh

its just simple to give the gun to another guard at the other side of the court room. Dont give it to the guard within arms reach of the prisoner. Having it like this would have saved 2-3 lives (cant remember how many died)

No guns. Tasers and batons...

I guess it depends on how you look at it. How many times in the past did the presence of armed Deputies prevent something from happening in the first place? This guy beat the first Deputy to the point she may die (looks good for her right now though) and he certainly didn't need a gun for that. What happens when another nut case comes in from the outside with a gun or some homemade device and nobody has a gun on the inside to defend themselves? You can say that they should have metal detectors etc. but that doesn't stop a nut ball. Just look at the guy that charged through metal detectors in Washington a few years ago, killing a couple of Capital security guards before being stopped. Sorry, but I think it would be irresponsible not to have armed security in the courthouse.
