Miyagi, I don't understand what you mean by "need" guns. As a law abiding citizen I have a right to own guns. It wasn't that long ago that the British could own firearms, but your government decided you couldn't be trusted with them.

That's pretty much it, see, this is how it works.

Gangs, robbers and other criminals have guns illegally and tend to use them. Since cops can't be everywhere at once it's a more desirable alternative than putting iron bars in every window and door of your house.

Well no..........but what if America had no guns, think of all the saved lives, obviously this isn't gonna happen anytime soon but the media have obviously put great fear into the u.s public about all these crazy psycho murderers running the streets. Of course theres the odd psycho and killer but the media has hyped it all up, just like Bush hypes up that red, amber, green alert thing to scare the shit out of everyone.
Its a shame you can't just outlaw guns there, I mean how many people have you shot with your guns? how many times have you pointed it at a criminal and have you ever found a psycho or killer trying to attack you?

Banning guns wouldn't do anything. Blame it on media hype all you want, but living in Southern California I know the kind of shit that goes on here. I'd rather have my guns (that I collect as a hobby, which conveniently work well in shooting people) instead of running to the back of the house and calling the cops every time I hear a noise outside.

Besides, it's not like the world is underpopulated.
