Damnit we cant all afford high speed you have to learn that thanks for your info though.

Wait high pings? haha my 56k said 3000 was the max.

Starcraft is still good...... really I mean it.

The problem is that there are too many none dedicated servers. people start servers without setting max players. I have 10 mbit cable and can only run 6 players.
as the game gets more popular more servers will probably start in your area.giving you lower pings.

Hey all first time poster,

I have been playing RTCW since it came out and on my 56k it's fine!

Now i've downloaded the MOHAA demo and i must say i'm very dissapointed at the pure slowness in multiplayer!!

I hope they get the code sorted as NTL haven't got cable in our area yet http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/frown.gif

Satellite sucks for multiplayer gaming. I used to have DirecPC (CRAP!) and it was awful. Here's why....

The one-way satellites still use a 56k modem to send information, including webpage requests. So if you click on "hotmail.com", the request is sent from your modem through your phone line, out to your isp who sends the request on to the DirecPC server, which sends the request up to the satellite (waaaaaaaay up in the sky), which then zaps it down to your satellite. The two way works similarly, except it's sent up throught the satellite, sent to the DirecPC (or whatever satellite isp you have) servers, which processes the request and then sends it back to your satellite.

Trust me, it's no good for online gaming.

acgreen, maybe Im wrong but my understanding is the distance between the comp and the orbiting satellite is what makes the latentcy so high on sat connections. The data has to make that jump 4 times to get from you to the server and back again. Hence its no good for gaming, believe me I've checked all my options and while sat would be good for downloads and streaming data it wont be any better than a modem if that good.

I actually have 2 modems in my comp now, a USR gaming modem and a ZOOM modem, both hardware and top rated. I switch between them if one isnt giving me what I think to be a good connection. Like I said, I play Tribes2 on the TWL ladder everyweek and gameplay is quite good. Hard for me to believe its my setup.

The state is building a school about 1/2 mile from me and the cable co usually provides schools here with cable, maybe I'll get a break soon. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Thx for keeping this a good thread and leaving the flames out guys, nice to see that on a forum!
