If the paintball gun was really discharging and throwing paintballs, who's to say he wouldn't have hit someone in the eye ? My guess (without watching a second time) is they were "reacting" to the air coming out of the gun...

Yeah, I don't think there's anything actually coming out of the gun.

Paintballs can hurt a little. He hit the bride how many times at close range? She'd have bruises everywhere and would probably be in a lot of pain.

Not having anything come out of the gun also eliminates the chance for jams, which would kind of screw up the whole thing cause the guy would probably start beating people.
