So what does this all mean to people who don't know shit about the details of vid cards....Is it like uber graphic capabilities on this thing or something?

geRV 07-12-2005 03:49 PM

Well 9800 had 8 pipes, x800xt had 16 pipes, r520 has (probably) 32 pipes which = a massive performance increase over cards that are already available. Pci express versions will have crossfire option meaning you can have 2 of the cards linked together to boost performance even more. ([url:af483]http://www.ati.com/products/crossfire/index.html[/url:af483])

If it comes with 32 pipes theres nothing that can touch it for performace with the exception of a 7800gtx sli setup. It supports sm 3.0 for hdr effects and all that crap, and will probably come with improved antialiasing modes to make images more defined. Crossfire setups allow 14x fsaa, when you consider the fact that current ati fsaa max is 6xfsaa and can produce images this clear you have to wonder how smooth 14x would look.

They are packing too much stuff into this tiny new core: 32 pipes, fp16 HDR with AA, and SM3.0. All on a brand new process that they aren't familiar with... Recipe for disaster, IMO.

I would have to agree with you on that one, although if ATI can pull this off successfully, the results would be total pwnage.

Also, whatever happened to the PPU (Physics card) that was supposed to be out soon? I haven't heard any news about it. It is supposed to cost as much as a mid-range gfx card ($200).

That's hardly even a pic. biggrin:

If it's true then I'm really surprised that the big reviewers ([H], Anand, Beyond3D, even THG) didn't do any special reports on it.

Bigger version here

It does appear to be a new card, it definately seems a lot longer than previous cards, its almost the same width as the motherboard in that pic.

It could be just an early version of the board, ati's boards usually end up being shorter than nvidia's, not sure why its soemthing to do with the layers or the density of the layers or something.

Anyhoo, im hoping spetember for an agp version, cash accumulating as we speak for it. biggrin:
