Re: Evolution / Adaptation

We're no longer evolving, but rather following a dysgenic trend.
Because of our current system, those people who would normally die as a result of their genetic imperfections or accidents, live to pass on their inferior genes and further pollute the pool instead of making it better. The disease prone and the inferior intellects continuously mix with the more healthy/superior in the pool and I don't think we're benefiting. Thankfully, research in genetics and medecine will neutralize this threat or at least alleviate the symptoms to some extent. Gattaca will be a reality sooner or later... Minor edit: another thing you might want to keep in mind is that the more intelligent in society have less children, helping the inferior genes become superior in numbers, which makes them the more prevalent and available, which is bad. Of course, it goes without saying that if we help the weak survive, they become reintroduced in the pool and help keep things the same or worsen it for all of us. Eugenics isn't such a bad idea: look at what it did for the Ashkenazi jews... |
what did it do for the ashkenazi jews?
heh heh that rhymes...i kind of agree with solidus' view, but i think it sounds too much like nietzsche... i dont really know about the idea of reverse-evolution per say evolution is, in essence, a change in natural properties, often for the benefit of survival, but also, think of our appendix (what was the benefit? there was no benefit, it disappeared because of lack of necesity)...the decrease in overall intelligence i think youre suggesting, jin has to be impossible in the face of our technological advances but either way, its still a change and is technically evolving a fascinating perplexitational question, indeed |
Watch out: technological advances do not mean we've evolved intellectually. For all you know, we may only have a handful of brilliant men and women creating new tools and machines to make the rest of us live more pleasant lives: in fact, it's always been this way. Only a few people ever made a real difference: the rest of us are simply along for the ride, though we should always strive to better the pool if only to increase the likelyhood that more geniuses come along to, again, make our lives easier. ;-)

de-evolution, as I like to call it, is possible. That is all the more reason why we have to take evolution into our own hands. Nature is so overrated.
