[quote:b0c83]Personally I reject the idea that there isn't enough oil and see it as OPEC/oil companies justification for gouging customers.[/quote:b0c83]

What do you know the oil executives and petroleum experts dont know? Its not whether or not there is enough oil to go around "today" (there is) - it when and how soon will each of the major oil producers "top out". The US already did - it is inevitable that others will as well.

[quote:b0c83]Other forms of energy are suppressed[/quote:b0c83]

Bullshit they are. Ethanol cars are peaking around the world and within 5 to 10 years youre going to see car manufacturers offering ETHA and BUTANOL cars as standard. Noone is suppresing ANYTHING, least of all fuel alternatives. Its just that people ARENT BUYING.

Proteus 07-28-2006 12:51 PM

Uuuum, I don't care if it's legal, they're all fucking douchebags. I vote for assassinations.

ninty 07-28-2006 01:01 PM

i understand oil prices are based on futures, however that doesn't excuse the fact that companies use peak oil as a ploy to increase profits by cutting production.

Kids can make a 50mpg car that runs on soy, the major car manufacturers could do the same and should infact be able to beat that.

Sophomoric response and the typical "blame game" anti-oil (and by extension, anti-American-Conservative) "activists" lob out there. Noone FORCES you to buy gasoline. Regulating oil prices in the united states because you dont want to pay 3 bucks at the tank (or 10 bucks american in the UK) is bullshit and anti-capatalism and would only HURT consumners in the long run. Whats next, regulating the price of a pair of sneakers? Of internet access? How about we start regulating the price of goods in YOUR service industry - see how long you keep your job then.

The oil companies arent the problem. Consumners are.

+1

It all has to do with Galbraith / Achenbaum / Friedman. I forgot which one is which. biggrin:

ninty 07-28-2006 02:53 PM

I'm not advocating regulation. The problem I have is businesses and unethical behaviour by using scarcity to drive up prices. They can set any price they want, however there are limited alternatives to consumers due to the monopoly over the market. Capitalism is about competition to drive down prices and give consumers viable options which is the opposite of how the industry works.

Madmartagen 07-28-2006 02:58 PM

i think they should be able to charge whatever they want for gas because people are going to pay for it. i just think its funny to see the execs sweat when they have to explain to everyone about profits.

c312 07-28-2006 03:20 PM

Didn't the SEC or some commission investigate Exxon and determine they hadn't been doing anything illegal?

Gas is a necessity in many North American lives. They can't just not buy gas.
