Christianity isn't that old when compared to other religions. Christians believe that Jesus who was jewish created the religion known today as Christianity. Therefore the religion is only 2000 years old.

Buddhism and Hinduism are much much older than Christianity.

Tripper 11-21-2002 01:51 AM

Where do Jews come in then? If Christians elaborated the Jewish religon 2,000 years ago....Then Jews must have been around for a fair bit longer.

I always thought Jewism (Is that the correct term?) was a basic form of christianity.

BTW, Ninty, you're right on the original point I made, I'm not attempting to pry into your brain here....I'm just ignorant about this kind of stuff. freak:
On an Australian show called CNNN, they sent a guy over to America and asked these (among other) questions...

Q: Where was the Berlin Wall ?
American Guys Answer: Uhhhh.... ::Prolonged silence:: I'm thinkin' about it man, but seriously I have no idea...

Q: Who is in the Axis of Evil ?
American Lady's answer: Hmm... Uhhm... Germany ?? And err, Florida ??[/quote:b95ac]

Ok, before you go around blaming the educational system in the U.S., did it ever occur that most teens have the attention span of a goldfish??

For all the people who live in the U.S. and think the schools suck, where do you people live? Where i live, the schools are rated tops. Remember, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

For those who live outside the U.S.(ahem......Canada), don't bother answering.

I'm not complaining, I have 3 kids in the public school system. They are all getting good grades. They probably can find more countries on a world map then I could when I was in school.

Ow, my brain. Judaism is the correct term. Judaism was around for thousands of years before Christianity. Things like the Babylonian Captivity took place many years before the time of the Roman Empire. The Old Testament (which is the Jewish Torah) is all the biblical stuff that happened before Christ was born during Roman times. The New Testament is the stories of Christ's life.

The religions have a lot of similarities, but there are a lot of differences. Much more than I could go into here. Besides, I'm hardly a scholar.

Geography just isn't important to some people, especially for countries and regions they have no intention of visiting. It is hardly a valid measure of intelligence or education systems. So my response would have to be - whatever.

eek:

SW-14 11-21-2002 05:45 PM

But when only 89% can point out their own country, that's just sad. I hope some of those people were just joking.

Old Reliable 11-21-2002 05:49 PM

Kids are like the music they listen to, it's short, pointless and doesn't have enough meaning to get them anywhere in life. It's true that TV and popular music influence the way we think in everyday life, attention span on tv is about 10 minutes then commercial (if even that long)...it's not the education system's fault but the kids fault

KTOG 11-22-2002 12:35 AM

Here we go ...

Hmmm i guess the kids in the US would know this one and beat out
all the other countries....

oh wait our country is full of ignorant shit heads...

SW-14 11-22-2002 12:52 AM

I'd like to think that they thought they'd be funny to answer it wrong. I mean, how can you really not know where your own country is on a map?

Way back when, when I was in school my friends and I would answer question wrong on test like that, We thought it was hilarius to screw with statics. We knew that it was'nt going to effect or grade. So on questions that we thought were too easy we'd purposely put the wrong answer.

Heh, If the youth of America were in charge of the Military, they'd most probably end up bombing themselves...

or at least canada

As I look at that map, it hits me that I might not know what 85% of those countries are, but then again, it doesnt bother me one little bit. I took world geography in college and think I got an A in it, but the truth is, I have no use for knowing what that country in the middle of s america is, or almost any in africa or eastern europe. I just dont care and I can lead a very full life without memorizing these countries every year. Ask me anything you want about GAAP or FERC. I am pretty durn good with spreadsheets and dbs, but those are what pay the bills, not geography.

I also agree with the responses about filling out non-graded surveys by the "christmas tree" method. The survey is irrelavant. It tells me that kids in canada are sheep and have no imagination. :P

Milla 11-22-2002 09:20 AM

20/20 :) im a smart american

Innoxx 11-22-2002 09:28 AM

Well, I travel alot and my dad did too, he really pushed me to remember places on the map, I'm probably the only kid in my school who knows the capital of Azerbaijan (Baku) by heart. Another thing, Mexico beat us all out.

Bazooka_Joe 11-22-2002 11:47 AM

That's bad. I know about 70% of my geography.
