The chances that the foam damaging the wing is very small. If anything it chipped one of the heat plates and that will cause big problems. And another reason could be pilot error. He may have been in too steep of a decent and over stressed the shuttle. Never count out pilot error no matter how good of a pilot they may be.

Gh0st 02-01-2003 12:38 PM

it could have been 1 of millions of things... but i just think its strange how a large piece of frozen foam fell off and hit the wing during liftoff... like he said it could have chipped on of the heat resistant tiles causing the tiles to fail and the spacecraft to break up. Even though its a small chance that that happened... small errors on spacecraft can be catastrophic as seen with the challenger...

BRAVERY

we go a long time without a mishap and forget just how dangerous it is to sit on top of all that rocket fuel and fly that bomb into space and return. we get so we dont pay much attention to it. the launch and the reentry and landing. we forget just how dangerous this is and the thousands of things that can go wrong at any second and create the loss of life we see now.these people didcate their lives to be able to fly into space.these people are some of the bravest people this country has to offer.its a sad day for the familys of these 7 brave people.in the future when theres a lauch maybe we sould consider the bravery and sacrifice these brave flyers are willing to make in the name of science and do what they dreamed of doing.our hearts should go out to these brave flyers and their familys for making the ultamate sacifice.mine does.

Im certain the astronauts always knew of the danger. As for the foam, if you have ever watched a takeoff from the look down cam on the tower you will see huge chunks of ice hitting the shuttle. if I had a chance I would still go up in one of those shuttles, even if I was told it would implode in space and never return, but it was my only chance to go into space, I would absolutly go. I would rather die in space than get shot in the face during war, or bleed to death in a car accident.

Not quite sure, I heard like around 1o'clock eastern time.

Gh0st 02-01-2003 12:53 PM

Whats also strange is that this week marks the anniversaries of the Apollo 1 fire on the launch pad and the Challenger explosion during takeoff...

Unknown_Sniper 02-01-2003 12:56 PM

Isnt today the anniversary of the challenger explosion? one of my teachers knew Krista McCollough the "Guest" on the challenger shuttle

Tha Great One 02-01-2003 01:00 PM

No. It was very close though, January 28.

Gh0st 02-01-2003 01:04 PM

The Challenger explosion was on Sunday the 27th...

Innoxx 02-01-2003 01:07 PM

Very harsh, my condolences go out to the friends and families of the astronauts. That's gotta be hell getting killed in that manner.

Milla 02-01-2003 02:23 PM

Just heard about it when i walked in the door at 11 o'clock, its a damn shame cry:

Gh0st 02-01-2003 02:48 PM

there are also reports that it may have been the tire pressure of the space shuttles tires. the last communication was reportedly about the tire pressure... the pilot said 'roger' and was about to say something else and then the transmission ended. If the tires exploded it would have ripped open the landing gear doors exposing the bottom of the spacecraft to the heat of re-entry...

Unknown_Sniper 02-01-2003 02:57 PM

not to mention the pressure of win at 12,000mph+ on a flat surface such as the landing gear bay's

Milla 02-01-2003 03:47 PM

fucking catastrophie hake:

I agree with Jedi. If you think we are all happy that 7 astronauts died and we lost a billion dollar Space shuttle which by the way no other country has then you are pretty dumb

Pyro 02-01-2003 06:04 PM

Now they got all the patrotic Americans back on their side...I can see it being worth lives and a shuttle...in american eyes anyway.

Pyro 02-01-2003 06:04 PM

hell with all the pissed off people about the war on Iraq, this will help them feel sorry for their country once again.

Unknown_Sniper 02-01-2003 06:12 PM

Yes I would like to see it get blamed on canada it would be quite funny. THey would cancel your contract and make parts here. Your country would go bankrupt and it would be one less country to remember in Geography. Just a couple more states

snipeymagoo 02-01-2003 06:12 PM

dont make any more enemies pyro, and please dude, STFU

Zap. USMC 02-01-2003 06:12 PM

For christ sake, if you're going to make negative comments on this subject, just don't fucking post them!

It'd be a different story if it was a Canadian or New Zealand astronaut.

Unknown_Sniper 02-01-2003 06:12 PM

Yes lets just cool it

Jedi Marksman 02-01-2003 06:13 PM

This disaster has NOTHING to do with you being American or Canadian. Nationality is irrelevant. If you call yourself a human being you should feel effected by this. Some of you frequenters of this forum really amaze me with your indifference and lack of respect for other people. Pathetic, really. I would also admonish your parents, because they should have raised you better. hake:

descry 02-01-2003 06:13 PM

Ya this fuckin sucks. Why the hell did it have to happen now? I think the US has enough shit to handle as it is.
