First off, the US reached the moon with Apollo 11.

Why should this be some international effort? Some countries like to have their own projects just like individuals. There are current international projects going on right now, but whats the big deal if we want to do this on our own? I dont see how this is selfish at all.

Pretty much nothing in space is unilateral. ISS is many nations. NASA shuttle crews are made up of people from all over the world and carry many international experiments and equipment. Heck, even the chinese trained with americans in Russia before they sent their first man into space.
