I'm not so sure about that anymore, i think the NFL has been passing A LOT more than they use to.

they played exhibition games in the 50's and 60's when both leagues payroll's were determined by ticket sales, allowing the cfl to get the same caliber player as the nfl. These days the talent in the NFL is heads above the CFL. But like you said its a different field. 12 Players + longer/wider field = more passing
