-50F is even possible?

-1F is enough to freeze water in like 15 minutes...

you wouldn't last like 5 minutes outside

Unknown_Sniper 01-29-2008 01:58 PM

-50 is absolutely possible
3 or 4 years ago it was -40f(-40c) for 3 weeks strait up here.*

*At some points this was do to a windchill.

Coldest temperature physically possible is about -460F or -273C. That is absolute zero (0 K) which is the absence of thermal energy. Basically no atoms move at all. I don't think it is physically possible to remove all thermal energy, but they have gotten extremely close. Like to 0.0001 of a degree within absolute zero. That's called the Bose–Einstein condensate which was just on NOVA about 2 weeks ago.

Space is about 2.7K which is -454F, or -270C.

On earth coldest temp recorded was -89C, which is -128F or 183K in Antarctica. So -40 or -50 on the Canadian prairies isn't that unheard of.

This afternoon it was ~40f and raining. In under 30 minutes the temp dropped 10f and the rain changed to sleet, then to heavy snow. An hour later it was around 15f super strong wind gusts and heavy snow.
Fucking weather.

ninty 01-30-2008 09:13 PM

if it was 40f here i'd be tempted to put my shorts on.

Unknown_Sniper 01-30-2008 10:03 PM

As would I. Hell a few weeks ago we had a thaw where it was around 50f and I threw on my shorts and walked around barefoot. Was amazing. Now I cant even stand outside because of all the ice.
When I was in the news station I was listening to the emergency/ police scanner. There were several big crashes this afternoon and the dispatcher was ordering officers to NOT travel to the crashes do to driving conditions.
