i'm in NY and couldn't still am waiting for dsl (its coming soon they say) so it is very possible that not all areas in FL have dsl yet. The main reason i'm getting dsl is for lower pings so I hope my dsl is gonna have lower pings than i get now - ~220 on 56k.

Dont bet on it. Depending on who you get, and what OS you are using, it is very possible for you to get great downloads, and speed - but atrocious ping times. I know I have AOL DSL and have pings of 150 to 300 on some servers. And lets not even speak of the pings running Windows XP.

It all depends on what you need the speed for. Satellite is great if all you do is download porn and mp3s. Mostly because its incoming (download) traffic rate is insanely high.

However, it sucks for online gaming, because its outgoing (upload) rate bites the big one.

Also - might wanna check into ISDN. In your situation, it might be better than getting DSL. I am BARELY covered by my phone company's CO. Which means I can just barely get DSL. Its great when it works, but it has a tendency to NOT work. Good thing I'm moving out soon. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif

just to spread the joy of information and i hate misinformation.

satelite sucks for gaming because of extreme latency not because the upstream is slow.

in some cases the upstream is a dialup modem, lately though, satelite has gone 2 way with both up and down satelite. It still suffers from latency problems though.

As for your isdn suggestion. IDSL is isdn so to speak. ISDN is 2d and 1 b channel(2 64K D channels 1 16K B channel). IDSL uses a different signaling scheme and thus can use all 3 channels over the exsisting ISDN backbone. IDSL is always better than isdn because it does away with per-minute charges and is obviously faster since isdn tops out at 128KBPS where as IDSL tops out at 144KBPS.

just curious, why would XP give "unspeakable" pings?
