As far as I'm concerned, this conversation is long over - I made my point with my last huge post, and Shawn's post following is just recycling his same beliefs that Jay-Z is one of the best emcees out there, which I believe is ridiculous and is pretty much his personal preference (so therefore useless to argue with).... Now random posters who have just come into this thread can harp on and on about just listening to what sounds good, but as soon as you start making comparisons and making up bullshit like shawn has then I won't back off in a debate when I disagree...Especially about hiphop, I have such strong feelings about the genre, I love it to pieces and I also hate the fucking shit out of what one side of it is doing to my generation. I also dunno who you're all talking to when you're telling us to listen to more than one genre - because I know I, and I believe Shawn as well (But not Bucknub, who obviously doesn't do "the dig" for his music) listen to a wide variety of different genres. So don't even start with that. P.s - Shawn, you should expand your tastes in hiphop, because those lyrics are really nothing special at all compared to other, more interesting stuff out there. That's really boring shit you posted in terms of quality of emceeing. ...and yes, M79, I was trying to have a discussion on what Jay-Z and others like him have done to hiphop, but it clearly went over Shawns head as he just rebuttled with a post regarding his weak lyrics and nothing to reply with regarding the guy's place in the genre. GAY......Z. <- If that heats you up, you need to go to a clinic and tell them you have obsession issues. Buckface, I'm looking in your direction. |
Lately I have been listening to Dead Prez. Almost every song they have is just so good... their song Hip Hop is KEY. Im seeing Jedi Mind Tricks, Outerspace, and RA the Rugged Man on September 22nd @ Higher Ground in Burlington VT (like 10 mins away from my college). Ill let you guys know how that goes!

I know so many people that say they're rap listeners, their favourite artists either Nas, Jay-Z, 50 cent etc, and yet I can't have a conversation about rap with them because they've never heard of any of the artists I listen too. They generally end up liking it because its so much more accesible than the bullshit pop rap which is confined to one subject matter which is criminal/violent/testerone/money fuelled rap. Pop hiphop has been dominated by this same boring subject for about a decade now, and its fucking jumped the shark, its boring, unoriginal and needs a kick in the ass to get going without this played out image - Its gone on so far past its use-by date that its becoming less and less like actual music and more and more like wrestling. All this dissing, all this hating shit - Its all just a ploy to sell records, Jay-Z vs Nas was just a glorified Hollywood Hogan Vs Someotherpencilneckedgeek with a soundtrack, and all these people buy into it and go on and on about the quality of the music, and how awesome it is. If 50% of the non-pop rap guys were given a chance they would sell just as well, if not far better, because the same guys I talk to that hate rap and just dont like it, are the same guys that get into alt/underground/backpacker rap or whatever you want to call it. The state of rap at the moment is unlike any genre...Its like a fucking conspiracy. I'm sick of turning on the radio, the tv, going to stores and hearing this shit, and not hearing ONE good song out of the millions that there are out there. I'm also sick of the general public not even knowing about an entire genre of music that is overshadowed simply be the refusel of, god knows who, to accept SUB-GENRES in rap. Rock accepts them. Jazz accepts them. Every other genre has recognized sub-genres...But hiphop is hiphop, and rap is hiphop. ....And so apparently Jay-Z is the same kind of music as Jurassic 5? Or the same kind of music as Five Deez? Or People Under The Stairs? Or MF Doom? That's like saying The Beatles are the same as Cannibal Corpse. It has no other name accept RAP/HIPHOP. So you're to assume the ones that are the most popular are the best in the genre. So basically Jay-Z is the best in rap? Ridiculous. Absolute fucking bullshit. phew....tripe rap/hiphop monthly hiphop schpeel version38392.124824 |
I really do agree with you tripper, there are a thousand sub-genres to rock that people listen to, plus their are radio stations dedicated to that sub-genre. I gurantee you if i went up to a hardcore "rap" lover, and i asked him if he knew who Jurassic 5, or People under the stairs, or MF Doom were,, they would probably look at me like i was a fucking retard.

People Under The Stairs have like SIX full length albums which are all brilliant near flawless albums, and they don't have one video....Why? Because apparently there is only one style of hiphop out there and its JAY-Z or CHINGY or LIL JON. Why is it, when I watch hiphop shows on music channels, or go to music stores to buy hiphop DVDs, they don't stock or play any of the music I listen too? Because apparently there is only one style of hiphop out there and its JAY-Z or CHINGY or LIL JON. |
