Sorry if I phrased my earlier post in a poor manner, what I should have said is that although IQ tests do measure the potential of a select candidate in an accurate manner, they often cannot be representitive of the population at large...

therefore, my assertion that "IQ tests are suspect" should read "results of IQ averages are suspect", as the testing would only include those of certian social standings and levels of education...

No. Newly designed tests do not take social or cultural standings into account
such that only five minutes describing their logic is necessary for everyone to
take them and have the same potential for success. The Wonderlic, in case I
wasn't already clear enough, is a bad example of a good IQ test, although it
has excellent norming due to the fact that millions of people worldwide have
taken a shot at it. There's a reason we have to test a large sample of the
general population in order to have accurate norms: otherwise, we would have
problems identifying anyone stuck on the far right of the bell curve. I'm sorry
you didn't know this, but it's all out there. Last bit: did you know they design
tests for different areas to avoid this "culture-loaded" problem ? I guess not.
If you were referring to online tests, I'm sorry I took the time to reply...

(Edit) PS. I apologize if I come off as being an ass: I'm tired of people
bashing something they hardly know about. The problem comes from a
special little site called Tickle/Emode, more usually mentioned than other
places. I took the time to read many of the APA articles, on top of having
a few discussions with shrinks and psychometricians, so I know about it.
No one would argue that a ruler measures distance (and height) because
we can clearly see how short or tall someone is. However, since intellect is
often concealed unless looked for, it's easier for people to misunderstand
how IQ testing works, even though the methods that were used to arrive
at an estimate are tried and true.

I wasn't talking about online IQ test at all, don't worry... I understand your frustration in this matter, I thought I knew a little about the tests, but obviously my info is outdated... What you have said is very interesting, and also makes alot of sense... I wasn't trying to bash IQ testing so much as I was aiming to simply be critical of the results... Thanks for the info...

So you decided to repost these hurtful comments to not only where
nyck would see them, but where you knew his wife would see them too. eek:

Although it is funny to see you try to dress it up as good deed,
it remains a pathetic, small-minded act.

It IS important to be critical of the results... especially when someone says
"hey, I have a 160 IQ!": what do they mean by 160 ? Are they referring to
a 15 or 24 point standard deviation ? If the former, they would be considered
exceptionally gifted, whereas on a 24 deviation, slightly above the gifted level.
If an online test gives you a result that doesn't include a percentile range, run.
Even if it did, online norming (or author extrapolation) invalidates the test from
the start. I only know of two, maybe three valid online tests... and even they
suffer from slightly inaccurate norming. Whatever your score online, it's good
to multiply by .95 to be sure of your result...

IQ tests are bullshit.

Google search: Multiple Intelligences.

Sweetj 11-10-2004 06:17 PM

If I could please add my $.02.

Yes they were ridiculous hurtfull words.

Since the Subject seems to have turned out to be about me here I'm going ot post my opinion on how the rest of the convo turned out.

I think Pyro was right in doing something about it. I don't think it was meant to stir shit up, I think it was meant to be hey.. look they're talking shit while you're not around. The Freedom of Speech route, leads both ways. I'm the one on the ass end of this one and while I'd rather I never heard anyone been as much of a boon as that, I'm glad I know because at least I know who on here is an ass/not. No one should be slapping Pyro on the wrist for this. It's not his faut that things were said, unless I'm missing part of this convo.

If this hadn't been said it just would have came back up later to bite us in the ass anyways.. better sooner than later.

If a Moderator is around, could you please lock the thread so we can all move on with our lives..

Thanks. beer:

Nice try. Even if included, Gardner's multiple intelligences theory doesn't
invalidate the concept of IQ or the measure of g, the general factor. Not
that I care about referring to motor skills as being a part of intelligence...

[sarcasm]
Still, after 150 years of scientific research and data, we're still not convinced
that intelligence can be quantified![/sarcasm]

Oh well... I guess it's part of the PC agenda: we're all equal! Now that we're
all the same height, weight and color, shouldn't we all be as retarded ? Yay!

Well, you haven't been here very long so you don't know Pyro or the way things work around here.......There is no way Pyro would have posted that to let you know what's being said about you in IRC for your benefit. He posted it to cause controversy between the people in IRC and the rest of the forum users, in this case, you and Nyck.
He does this because he isn't accepted very well in the IRC channel because he is usually a shithead.

People just aren't that nice around here to do things like that. I'm afraid Pyro was just being a regular shithead....He fucked up, realised it, and tried to cover it up as a good deed, as Eight Ace just posted earlier....

Short Hand 11-10-2004 09:04 PM

I still think it was pretty shitty thing to do. Now now, lets not try and take the heat off yourselves by blaiming pyro too.

I'm really the only one blaming him here, and I never said anything in the channel towards either nyck or sweetj - I'm sticking up for the other guys because I know what goes on in there and how people can manipulate what is said in there by cutting and pasting portions of text and noth the whole thing, etc....
