[quote:0945e]not to mention the inquisitions and the stupid witch hunts[/quote:0945e]

Some people use a religion as an excuse to wage a war, convict someone of something, etc.

Just because one represents a religion (who abuses it and makes a bad name for it) doesn't mean the religion is based on "ones" beliefs.

Because being a chem major I know how the universe works (more or less), there's nothing divine or magical about it.

Religion believes Science is evil and their bible is more proof then the ACTUAL proof science has came up with.

I remember hearing about a group of religious fanatics that believed God planted the dinosoar bones to mess with the non-believers. oOo:

SoLiDUS 10-31-2002 10:39 PM

I believe in God (I don't like the name though) but not in the christian God:

- the "Bible" was written by men seeking to enthrall the lowly populace with
flashy stories and a totally illogical final "punishment" for being a sinner:

- how can a supremely intelligent being created such a logical universe and
yet sentence his creations to an eternity of suffering for events that took
place in their lives, some of which they didn't really have any control over
(study sociology and criminology and you'll understand), also considering
that they only have ONE life to prove their worth to be accepted in "heaven"

Sorry, but even I hold a much more realistic view of a God and the afterlife!

Then there's always those nutcases who don't take their kind to the doctors saying that God will cure them.
There was a case not too long ago when a kid died from a common bacterial infection because of this.
In my book this is inhumane torture and should be punishable by death. (think back to when you had bronchitis or strept, not pleasant was it)

Aqualung

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the beginning Man created God;
and in the image of Man
created he him.

2 And Man gave unto God a multitude of
names, that he might be Lord of all
the earth when it was suited to Man

3 And on the seven millionth
day Man rested and did lean
heavily on his God and saw that
it was good.

4 And Man formed Aqualung of
the dust of the ground, and a
host of others likened unto his kind.

5 And these lesser men were cast into the
void; And some were burned, and some were
put apart from their kind.

6 And Man became the God that he had
created and with his miracles did
rule over all the earth.

7 But as all these things
came to pass, the Spirit that did
cause man to create his God
lived on within all men: even
within Aqualung.

8 And man saw it not.

9 But for Christ's sake he'd
better start looking.

The essence of all religions is faith. One definition of faith is: Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. Early in human history faith is all we had to explain most of our world. Modern day humans have learned much since then, eliminating the need for faith in things that we've proven scientifically. We're continually learning and discovering the answers to things only a faith in God could explain. On the other hand, what happens when you trace the origins of everything back to the very beginning of it's existance? You end up at God. The beginning of our universe is the Big Bang (in theory). Where did all the matter, the elements, everything that makes up our universe come from? It just appeared one day from nothing? Bullshit. The only possible answer is God.

The truth is no living person really knows the truth.

Yes, but then you ask yourself, where did god come from, and the whole God idea makes no sense. We're back at the beginning.

Like I said in another thread: between a universe appearing ex nihilo and
a prime mover designing it with a purpose, I'll go with the later. After all,
the geniuses who actually make humans take steps forward seem to be
convinced as well ;)

Besides, it gives you something positive to look at when nearing your
deathbed or just viewing life in general: somehow, reincarnation sounds
yummy biggrin:

if the big bang created the universe, what created the big bang?

Exactly! In my opinion, I don't believe in anything untill it is proven. And, untill you can prove to me there is a "God" or higher being, I will stick to "CONCRETE" proof. Such as there is in evolution. There are thousands of peices of evidence to prove old Chucky D's theories were correct. NOT ONE SINGLE PEICE OF EVIDENCE TODAY SUGGESTS OTHERWISE...Creationism that is. "Bring to me proof and I shall believe, but untill then, keep your brainwashed antics to yourselves!"

Now, onto the quote above about Jesus. In the times of his "so called" existance, society was (as a median) not as educated as it is today. We have discovered through scientific discoveries a substantial amount of information and passed it down through the last four or five generations in the form of education. Jesus was (to me) another "DAVID KIRESH", a cult leader, a man among children who wanted to feel immortal because the people who saw him as "superhuman" were not educated enough to know better. I just thank our past geniuses (and Mr. Darwin of course) for the education that he has brought to me and my generations to come. For now we can think for ourselves, and there (in my opinion) will never be another Jesus, Just wannabee Kiresh's that try to manipulate our now educated minds.

Yeah, like Montezuma II thought Cortez was the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. The aztecs believed that Quetzalcoatl sailed off into the sea and will one day return. Well, Cortez used his new found empowerment to take advantage of the totally clueless Aztecs and took Montezuma as his prisoner and occupied the palace, the Aztecs rebelled, more Spaniards came, bloody battle ensued, Montezuma died, and the Aztec civilization crumbled. Religion is evil. Faith is evil.
