James and Craig were old school buddies. One day they met at a pub and Mark told Steve that he had 3 kids and asked him to guess their ages.

Mark:Their ages multiplied give 36.
Steve:Thats not enough.
Mark:Their ages put together are the same as the number of that building there
Steve:Thats not enough.
Mark:The oldest one has blonde hair.
Steve:Ahh, easy then...

What ages are Marks 3 kids??

The Experiment:

1) At 12:00am, a certain amount of people had a big red dot painted onto their back by some ultra-quiet sonic painter from above without anyone noticing.

2) When it's dawn, it was announced that all 30 people may walk around looking at other people's back, but one wasn't allowed to look at ones own back or communicate with other people in any way, otherwise the whole group of 30 people would be killed.

3) The person(s) whose back were painted should commit suicide at 12:00am the next day, or the whole group would be killed. The experiment will go on until all red-dotted person(s) are dead. The painting process will only be done once, and that is on the first day of the experiment.

Given:

1) These are the thiry most intelligent people in the world.

2) Each individual is willing to play by the rule and is prepared to die to save the whole group.

3) At least one person's back was painted.

On the August 8th, 2004 at 12:00am, the game was over.

How many person(s)'s back were painted, when exactly did he/she/they (if they, each of them) commit suicide, and why.

all thirty

No. I've got many PMs asking me for answers ed:

Anyway, for those who are interested. Here's the tip that I gave:

Imagine if you were one of the thiry people. On the first day, you walked around and looked at the other 29 people's back, and you've found NO ONE with a red dot.

What do you do then?

I'd like to also add that the following questions, all of them, can be worked out by logic - I did, honestly.

How could the expiriment end on august 8th? Wouldnt it HAVE to end on the 2nd? If all the red painted people killed themselves at the instructed time (12am aug 2nd), the game ends aug 2nd. If they dont kill themselves, the aliens would kill them all and the game would also be over aug 2nd. you lost me on that

The red dotted people can only kill themselves upon the realisation that
they are marked: it doesn't count unless they know for sure. So if you've
got 7 people with marks, it would wait until the 8th day for everyone to be
sure.

Suppose you're one of 4 marked people: on the first day, you see 3 marks
and 26 unmarked. You wait until the second day and they are still around...
That can mean that the other 2 marks haven't yet realized that they are
painted. You wait until the third day: if there are only 3 marks, it should be
the decisive and on the fourth day, none of them will be alive. On the fourth
day, however, they're still around... which can mean only one thing: you are
also marked. On the fifth day, every one of you would die. This works for all
of the marked (same logic).

So, if the game ends on the 8th day, there were 7 people with marks. They
all died on the same day...

beer:

In short, 7 people were painted. Among the whole 30 people 23 of them saw 7 dots, and 7 of them saw 6 dots, and it would take those 7 people 7 days to realize that they were also painted, and then the game was over.

haha interesting. 3 3 4?

SoLiDUS 09-07-2004 12:53 AM

Hehehe... it's a reading question. We're no longer dealing with
James and Craig: who the hell are Steve and Mark ? The goals
are to direct your attention elsewhere before you realize it and
confuse you with an unsolvable problem: by focusing on it, you
are unaware of the fact that you've fallen for a redirection...

can someone explain it? I understand the 1st part of the riddle with the multiplication, but what's with the blonde?

Well. Here's what I think.

36 = 2 x 18, 2 x 2 x 9 or 2 x 3 x 6
36 = 3 x 12 or 3 x 3 x 4 or 3 x 2 x 6
36 = 4 x 9, 2 x 2 x 9 or 2 x 3 x 3
36 = 6 x 6, well, basically nothing we haven't seen before.

So it's either

2 x 2 x 9
2 x 3 x 6
3 x 3 x 4

Am I missing anything?

But it also says "it's Their ages put together are the same as the number of that building there".

People don't like 13, so

<strike>2 x 2 x 9</strike>
2 x 3 x 6
3 x 3 x 4

Oldest one has blonde hair... so meh... maybe the other two are twins?

<strike>2 x 3 x 6 </strike>
3 x 3 x 4

Well granted, the last tip wasn't 100% solid but logically that should stand.
