NBC to become home of the NHL in 2004-05
NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League and NBC Sports today announced a partnership in which NBC will televise NHL games beginning in 2004-05. The two-year agreement may be renewed for an additional two years at NBC's option. The joint announcement was made today by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics. "We're thrilled to be entering into a partnership with the NHL," Ebersol said. "We're acquiring a major, established sport that is rich in tradition - and we're doing it in a way which fits our strong historical commitment to financially sound deals which offer significant upside for both parties." The revenue sharing agreement calls for NBC, beginning in January 2005, to televise seven regular season games and six Stanley Cup playoff games in regular Saturday afternoon timeslots. In addition, NBC will broadcast Games 3-7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in primetime. "NBC is renowned for innovative programming and unique promotion of its sports properties," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. "From the days of our Game of the Week in the '70s and onward, through our relationship at the Olympics, NBC has demonstrated an understanding of hockey and the commitment to the promotion of the game and its stars. We're delighted to be in a partnership with NBC." Ebersol: "Clearly, the NHL understands the importance of the broadcast platform and also realizes that the cycle of broadcasters absorbing profound losses in sports rights is coming to an end. We bring to the NHL promotional intensity and creativity along with a powerful distribution system that got even better with the recent Universal merger. "This deal is a tribute to Ken Schanzer and his extremely effective efforts in implementing our sports strategy through deals such as this one over the past few years. The NHL game is terrific and we relish the opportunity to work with Gary Bettman and his team to continue the increase in viewership which began during this year's Stanley Cup playoffs." This partnership, subject to NHL board approval, represents a homecoming of sorts for the NHL, whose first broadcast network contract was with NBC in 1966 to air Stanley Cup playoff games. NBC's NHL heritage also includes the "Peter Puck" era from 1972-73 through 1974-75 and NHL All-Star Game telecasts from 1991-94. ============================= Way to commit yourself NBC. oOo: Stupid afternoon games. Fucking American TV ruins the whole thing. |
afternoon games are horrible...dont people do stuff during the day in the states? guess they just sit on the couch and watch tv oOo:

And it wrecks hockey night in canada.
There hasn't even been a hockey night in canada saturday night the last two rounds of the playoffs because of ABC/ESPN. At least there will be 2 if the cup finals goes to 6. |

haha..i really hope they can finish it off tonight, but they seem to play better on the road
|
yeah thats messed up, all the away wins... if SJ wins this will be the first time in NHL, NBA, or MLB history that the home teams have won first 6 games in a series... i think the flames are gonna take it though, tonight the home ice advantage is gonna be huge, this game is more important than the others, i think the Flames will rise to the occasion...

holy fuckars
i just got home from 17th ave. what a nut house. watched the game at a buddies house. went down to 17th to find 35,000 other people down there. The cops had 17th blocked off from 4th street to 8th street. I parked at the saddledome as there was no one attending the parking lot and it was empty since everyone was trying to get out. Started at 1st street and 17th ave and walked west. From 1st all the way up to 4th is was packed with cars and I rand up giving high fives to everyone in the cars. Once we got to 4th it was just a sea of people. At 5th street it was the most crowded i've ever seen in my life. It took me about an hour to navigate from 5th to 6th. Good thing i'm not closterphobic. I'm, suprised no one got trampled. It basically was a huge ass mosh pit. there was probably 5-10,000 people in that one block alone. There were some chicks dancing on cars and roofs so thats probably why. Walked up to 8th where the roadblock ended and realized that I had lost two of my buddies in the sea of people. Stood around for another hour waiting for them to come to us. Finally got them on the phone and one came up to 8th. We went a block south so we could get on to 16th ave to avoid the mosh pit and got back on 17th at 4th street and walked back through the cars where by a sudden miracle we ran into the other lost friend. We went back to the car and drove home. Spent probably 3 or so hours down there. Incredible. Coolest thing i've seen in my entire life. a lotr of cops. a lot of beer. cops were cool though. they went up to people and took the beer and dumped it out. no fines or arrests. waste of beer though. some cops were even giving high fives to drunk people. rock: http://www.canada.com/sports/story.html ... F61CCCA774 As for the game, talk about clutch players. Iggy and Gelly. Thats why Iggy is the captain. Where would we be without him. And Gelly is the eliminator. The Flames beat all three division champs to get to the finals. Including the presidents trophy champs detroit. No team has ever done that before. Best in the west baby! Now we get to raise that new banner for the rafters next year!!! Hopefully there will be another one beside it with some silver looking thing on it. rock: [url=http://members.shaw.ca/sureloss/Getti-IndaDome%20Version%203%20Radio%20Rip.mp3:726f2]In Da Dome Stanley Cup Version 3[/url:726f2] http://www.vibe985.com/special/video1.wmv http://www.vibe985.com/special/video2.wmv |
*cough*relying on a hurricane to win series*cough* He did it for Carolina...and look what happened to them in the finals...

Yes Shawn, the only one who can score on Calgary is Gelinas. In the dressing room they al say that Gelinas has to score because no one else can. We don't rely on Gelinas to score, he just has been. Hes a good player, and thats what god players do. The goals against VAn and Det were both off rebounds from Conroy and Iginla. Anyway, I don't care. Calgary is in teh Stanley cup finals and 4 wins away from winning the whole thing.

We're not a one year wonder. We've been rebuilding for the past 10 years. It just so happens we've been able to go further ion the playoffs than anyone thought. Darryl sutter is this team. Without him we probably woulnd't be here. No doubt about it. He was the missing piece. We had a winning record with Darryl last year when he took over midway through the year. So i'm sure if he was coach fort the whole year, we would have made the playoffs last year as well.
And what does history have to do with anything? We're not living in the past. Things aren't set in stone. Things can change. We have the ability to win. Just because Anaheim and others lost doesn't mean we will too. |
