It's hard to say. There's mix of a lot of stuff on there. One thing it isn't is a concept album...which is fine by me.
The Root Of All Evil - kickass prog metal. Instant DT classic
The Answer Lies Within - syrupy ballad. Solid tune, but it's not my speed today for some reason
These Walls - mid-tempo and powerful. There's almost a Rush-like sound to the keyboards, especially toward the end of the tune
I Walk Beside You - smells like a single to me. Kinda mainstream riffage, catchy chorus. Again, it has a Rush vibe to it...hard to explain.
Panic Attack - my fave song on the album. Full balls-out smoker! Right from the get-go the pace is furious. Guitars are tuned down and LaBrie's vocals swing from acidic to totally controlled.
Never Enough - another strong tune. Lotsa subtle stuff happening in the background...Portnoy near hypnotized me with his high-hats. There's some techo-noodling I could do without, but Petrucci kindly interrupts with some killer riffage.
Sacrificed Sons - here come the epics. This one's just under 11:00 and starts out pretty slowly. With about 6:30 left in the tune Myung and Petrucci kick it up a notch and start a lengthy instrumental worth of masturbation. The rest of the song kicks much ass.
Octavarium - At 24:00, this better be good right? It's a snorefest until around 11:40 left in the tune. At that point some trippy old school 70s-afterschool-special keyboards kick in and it's awesome! Of course, the rest of the tune is absolutely awesome.
