That's 747.50$ CAN

My heart just stopped..

Anyhow, does anyone have any idea where I can get this card for much lower !? I don't care *where* it comes from..

Polaris 06-28-2001 02:35 AM

why do you need it now . i'd say wait a couple of months till the price drops

SoLiDUS 06-28-2001 02:52 AM

That's what I was intending on doing anyway but if there is an alternative (street-wise, niuk niuk http://www.pcgamers.net/ubb/smile.gif ) to getting one I'm all for it.. http://www.pcgamers.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Why not just buy a GeForce 3?

Don't laugh.

AMD K6-2 500mhz

20g hdd + 3.5g hdd
NVidia TNT2 M64 32megs
SB Awe64

Wanna know what my 3dmark2001 score was??!
440..

440 for fucks' sake.. PATHETIC.

Wolfshook 06-28-2001 06:59 AM

Solidus, a Geforce 3 won't run any faster than a Geforce 2, on your computer. I have run into the same kind of problem with mine. You'd need an 800 or 900 mhz, to even begin to take advantage of the extra power of the GF3.

Well I won't be stuck with a pathetic framerate while playing games.

The rest of the hardward can wait...
But I sure as hell can't play MOH:AA with my current configuration / video card.

And I know some people will say "well, the min. requirements blah blah.."

Min. Req. don't allow you to play the game comfortably : you will be incessantly distracted by choppy framerates.

But I digress : I really need a new card. If anyone knows where I can get a GREAT deal on either a GF2 Ultra or GF3, please let me know.. I can't frag you if I can't play the game ya know LOL

SoLiDUS: I used to write a hardware column for pcgamers.net (ask BS if you don't believe me) if that means anything to you; but Wolfshook hit it right on the spot. The bottleneck of your 3D performance right now is your CPU.

That said, your TNT2 is also outdated, but I would upgrade the CPU first for three reasons:

1) It's cheaper. Even if that means you will need to buy a good mobo.

2) It will also improve your day to day appz performance, as opposed to GeForce3, would your windows load up faster with a GeForce3? Not likely...

3) The original nVIDIA GeForce 256 press release explictly said that it's designed for 3rd generation CPU, whatever that means; but it's a known fact that those graphics cards work best with P3/Athlon class CPU. You will probably notice little to no improvement with a GeForce3 if you stay with your current CPU. I won't get a GF3 unless I have a P4...

In other words, dude, don't get the GeForce3, you will regret doing that, upgrade the K6-2 500 first. Hope that helps.

I disagree for 2 reasons :

1- I "WILL" see quite a difference when playing my games if I have a high-end video card. GPU's on the Geforces' means less strain on my processor, which will be able to do much more for me that way. WIN-WIN.

2- It wouldn't be much cheaper: a 250$ processor + the appropriate motherboard, another 200$, would be cheaper, but not by much..

Even then, having a good processor / mobo combo won't change dick with my TNT2. So priority --> Vid. Card.

Of course, I don't necessarily need a GF3, I just plan ahead.. http://www.pcgamers.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

SPF-15 06-28-2001 09:19 AM

1) I doubt it. I don't have any data on how a GeForce2/3 perform on a K6-2, but I'm not keen to find out from a disappointing fellow MohAA forum guy either http://www.pcgamers.net/ubb/smile.gif

2) Still, it won't improve your computer's overall performance (cept photoshop, if you use it at all). A new CPU/mobo will.

Oh well, it's your money http://www.pcgamers.net/ubb/biggrin.gif Good luck bro. Again, I do have some experience with these stuffs...

P.S. let me know what happen after you buy your new graphics board, I really am curious.

www.guru3d.com

go there and read all you like about the pros and cons of computing and hardware.
The CPU is the bottleneck of your system as SPF-15 said, you will see little change in performance if you get a GF3. You really need to upgrade your CPU before you buy a highend video card. You cant count on the GF3 alone to do all the work. The games will still more than likely have poor performance. You need a good CPU just as much as you need a good Video card.
