enchance gaming preformance

i was over at a buddy of mines house, who just so happens to be in my SH clan, and i jumped onto his manchine to play a little SH. well until this time, the way i figured online gaming to be was that it was alittle bit choppy. not extremely choppy, but slightly..well his online gaming preformance was amazing. he was pinging in the 50's, which is where i ping most of the time, and the game ran so smooth. not one bit of choppiness. i went like 45 and 27, which i never play that will. his machine is no better than mine. we are both running xp with a 64meg gforce video cards, the only difference is he has a G of DDR ram and I am using 512 SD ram. (my mother isnt compatible with DDR)
After playing on his manchine and then going home to mine was depressing. so i have to find out how i can enhance my online gaming preformance to match his.

what do you think..? if i up my ram, do you think it will smooth out the choppiness?

thanks for your help.

The difference lies in the fact that he can use his video card's DDR capability
whereas you can't because of your SD motherboard: I have the same problem.

The video card can only go as fast as the memory you use... if it's DDR and
you use SDR, its speed will be limited to that of your motherboard. I suggest
getting a new motherboard compatible with double data-rate ram...

i guess i'll have to resort to switching motherboards. it's just a hassle, cause now i'll have to get all new ram.

so you dont think just uping my SDR ram to Gb would help at all?

thanks

Wha? never heard this one before. In fact im near sure that statements false sloi, if thats the case when the geforce 256 sdr came out a couple of years back how come the ddr version showed a substantial performance difference over it even though back then all mainboards were sdr based?

I have the same problem, my dads fitted with a gig of rdram and a pentium 4 cpu, however my mom isn't as upgradable, shes limited to a coppermine 1ghz pentium 3 with 512 megs of sdram. cry:

My mother is a junkie, she's incompatible with a DDR based video card. It sucks.

You are bottlenecked on your ram. That is your big hold up. But your ram is hosed because your mobo wont support DDR and your frontside bus is capped.

Short answer - assuming you are running an xp or a p4, replace your mobo and ram. You should see a fairly big improvement. A new mobo will also give you room to upgrade your processor in the future.

*walks towards Nelly from behind and bashes him several times with a
wooden baseball bat filled with rusty, crooked nails*

*walks away silently, bloody bat in hand, whistling the theme to reading
