THON Dance for Cancer
I know I've made posts about this last year. It's time for THON again. It's the world's largest student run philanthropy. It's a Penn State tradition to raise money for Hershey Medical Center and childhood cancer research. It's really an amazing event where "dancers" stand for 46hrs straight (no sitting at all) and get sponsors for doing so. Last year they raised over $4 million and this year they hope to make it even more.
Its being held in the Bryce Jordan Center (used to be in Rec Hall) this year which gives 4 times the room. A lot of people come to support the event from tv celebrities to sports heros. The kids look forward to it every year and interact with the students as they dance for 46 hours. Every year they make up a special dance to do at every hour. Here are two videos about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np6elB0U3SU http://thonpass.cse.psu.edu/video/2007/gladiator.html And my brother is head of the webcasting team this year so you can even watch it live from the webcasting which is really cool. http://thonpass.cse.psu.edu/webcast/ It'd be awesome if you can donate any amount of money. It's for a great cause and you know it's going to the right checking account (unlike those fanatical southern evangelical preachers on tv). You can donate online at http://www.Thon.org Cool stuff. |

[quote="[DAS REICH] Blitz":e0685]46 hours ed:[/quote:e0685]used to be 48 but they had to shorten it by 2 hours because of some time conflict with the Bryce Jordan Center. Yeah, I've heard how they get delusional and stuff by the last few hours from the lack of sleep and straight standing.

just got back from it a little while ago. My brother's gf interviewed me on the webcast rock: I'm an international star. I'm going back tomorrow sometime and will be on the floor (getting a special pass) so you may see my big head

just got back from being there for over 17 hours. I am finding out more and more.
1) If you are a dancer, you can't even go to the bathroom without telling the rules committee. If you're a girl, you get to sit down for 30sec to piss. Guys have to stand up. If you have to shit, you have to sign out on a piece of paper and tell someone to accompany you to make sure you don't accidentally fall asleep on the shitter. 2.) A lot of the girls (sorority girls mostly) have great asses. This is the only time when I am happy that spandex is "in fashion". Only in the BJC I am happy for this wonderful material. It makes looking around very enjoyable. 3.) If you can, tune into the webcast between 1-6pm est Sunday to watch the final hours. They reveal how much money we raised, show slide shows of pictures taken, show/interview success stories of cancer kids, and even show tribute to the kids that passed away from the past year from cancer. |
