Problems with lag on the AA game server
For some reason the past two days I've had some real bad lag problems... My ping will always be low and my fps rate is fine. I've checked with my ISP and after doing a loss packet test and bandwidth test my connection is fine.
I just ran a virus scan, full scan disk and defrag but it is still laggy... any other suggestions of what I can do to try and fix this.. I was thinking it might be the game server but when I ask.. usually only one other person is lagging and not everyone... help me... I'm going into shock with no MohAA.. .. I actually haven't checked any other server.. last time I jumped into a non realism server I was getting hammered with shotties and it was nothing but cussing and trash talking.. |
okay.. I just went to a random server and I was still getting lag...
maybe it is my ISP... crap this sucks..!!!!!!!!! I just installed some scanner software.. but that couldn't be the problem could it?????? ={PaPa}=..Cap.. |
Oh.. forgot to mention that I disable my firewall as well.. so that couldn't be the problem...
anyone.. Rude.. Joe... someone.. ??????? |
it could be your ISP.
Try this: at a command prompt type tracert 65.214.59.132 This will give you every hop to the game server. If you see * ( meaning dropped packets ) then you can find out if it's in your ISP network or on the outside "Internet" Inside your ISPs network = you can complain to them outside your network = hopefully they fix the router soon. Good luck |
Rude: When speaking with my ISP they said I had no lost packets.. but I'm assuming that is when he was trace routing to my PC...??
Is this correct... |
Yah they check your connection from your IP address to their providing signal. They check to see if theres any packets lost in the signal between the two.
|
I had the same prob. but give it a few days and it be fine. It was not my ISP I could DL at my top speed. but in moh it lagged
|
But I am fine now :D

they had me go to dslreports.com and I was well over 800 kbps.. one test was 1100 kbps |
Guys don't confuse download speeds with latency ( ping ) or packet loss.
It's never the ISP's fault  ! You will be able to download very fast but it may take a little extra time for that first packet to get from your computer to the server your requesting a download from. Once the download starts its just a steady stream from that point. When playing MOH your sending all kinds of new and unique packets. These take time thus you see lag. tracert will show you each hop (router) and the time it takes to receive a packet from that hop. All the way to your destination. Here is an example of my tracert [code:3e7e9]C:\Documents and Settings\jim>tracert 65.214.59.132 Tracing route to 65.214.59.132 over a maximum of 30 hops 1 5 ms 5 ms 20 ms 10.2.120.1 2 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms 68.9.8.85 3 109 ms 9 ms 14 ms 68.9.8.201 4 9 ms 8 ms 15 ms provdsrc01-gew0304.rd.ri.cox.net [68.9.14.9] 5 12 ms 10 ms 12 ms 68.1.0.44 6 63 ms 35 ms 64 ms mtc1bbrc02-pos0103.rd.om.cox.net [68.1.0.47] 7 37 ms 35 ms 36 ms mtc1bbrc01-pos0100.rd.om.cox.net [68.1.0.122] 8 * 92 ms 43 ms 12.125.72.49 9 49 ms 54 ms 51 ms gar1-p370.mpsmn.ip.att.net [12.122.2.218] 10 65 ms 49 ms 52 ms gbr6-p30.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.2.222] 11 70 ms 56 ms 48 ms gbr4-p90.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.122.5.14] 12 49 ms 52 ms 48 ms ggr1-p370.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.123.5.149] 13 52 ms 54 ms 53 ms POS5-1.BR5.CHI2.ALTER.NET [204.255.168.57] 14 56 ms 52 ms 55 ms 0.so-3-1-0.XL1.CHI2.ALTER.NET [152.63.71.93] 15 51 ms 51 ms 53 ms 0.so-1-0-0.TL1.CHI2.ALTER.NET [152.63.67.105] 16 59 ms 55 ms 80 ms 0.so-2-3-0.TL1.NYC8.ALTER.NET [146.188.163.170] 17 68 ms 77 ms 58 ms 0.so-7-0-0.XL1.BOS4.ALTER.NET [152.63.0.209] 18 * 82 ms 60 ms 0.so-7-0-0.XR1.BOS4.ALTER.NET [152.63.16.122] 19 60 ms 63 ms 59 ms 0.so-7-0-0.WR1.BOS6.ALTER.NET [152.63.29.217] 20 * * * Request timed out. 21 * 65 ms 60 ms 208.254.32.2 22 62 ms 63 ms 66 ms 65.214.59.132 Trace complete.[/code:3e7e9] I live in RI, the server is located in Boston Mass. You would think I am very close to the server, but looking at this you see that I an getting to the server via Chicago -> NY then to Boston. I know for a fact that normally my provider ( cox cable ) exits in Altanta. For some reason. Most of my packets are going through ATT's system. This may be caused from the MCI/worldcom fall out and my provider is taking no chances. This also shows some packet loss round my 18 - 21st hop. These look like they are located at my game servers provider. Who ever they have to provide Internet access to the servers running MOH This is the first time I have looked at a tracert to the aa.com dedicated server. I will be keeping an eye on this. if this continues I will contact the provider and see if they are getting any other complaints. tracert can be a very helpful tool when looking at lag from a game server. This is a very basic overview of tracert . There are other GUI tools that do a much better job at this then from a command prompt. |
I know what my problem is... 56 friggin' K!
|
Thank you Rude.. I'll do mine when I get home from work tonight...
|
Well I just received a phone call form xgs hosting :o
They wanted to let me know personally that their has been some problems with MCI ( who would have guessed ) They will be moving all there servers from Boston to Washington DC. They said they have been having some minor problems with MCI. This will take effect around Aug. 23rd. Again both servers will be up while the change over takes effect. Hopefully this will decrease everyone's pings to the server. I must say I have been very happy with all the features and customer server from XGSHOSTING. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a provider to host their game server. OK, now who complained to my game server provider? |
one of our servers is hosted by them. When is this taking effect rudedog?
|
I believe aug. 20-23ish they will be notified everyone.
Both new and old servers will be up for 1 week. This way you can xfer your stuff from one to the other. |
