All you guys going into the military...
Anyone whose going into any sort of military/army training, what are you doing to get ready in the way of physical exercise?
|
The marines gave me a book all about training before going into boot camp. It tells u stuff from 10 months all the way to 2 days away from boot camp, i just follow what the book says and it said physical training in boot camp should be a breeze. Everyother day i run 1.5 miles, than ill pick up more eventually
|
Well Im going to the recruiter tommorow, but I've been doing the usually, running, push-ups, sit-ups..etc.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, I run an average of two miles. I do this because I am trying to get back in shape for track this spring. **PYRAMID WORKOUT** 10 reps- 135 lbs (very easy) 8 reps- 155 lbs (easy) 6 reps- 175 lbs (a little hard) 4 reps- 195 lbs (now burning like a mofo) 4 reps- 200 lbs (big ass hard as hell set) 2 reps- 210 lbs (hard, but not quite as bad) 1 rep- 220 lbs (this one I usually can't do, I'm too burned out) NOTE the weight will change with your strength but that pyramid workout is the best to achieve size increase and muscular developmnent of the chest and shoulders. Also be aware that if you just want to get in shape, I recommend doing more reps but less weight, and if you're building muscle, do this pyramid. |
Good stuff, screw the grapefruit diet. I am pretty active when I'm not online, but I'm still kind of a butterball I should try that pyramid thing out, I don't wanna lose weight, just wanna build my muscles.
|
If you want to find the weights that you need to workout with just max out on a standard olympic weight bench. Take 70% of your max and make that weight the weight you will use for your 6 rep set. For instance, my last max was 250 lbs, so I just multiplied that my .70 which gave me 175. Then just use that pyramid chart increasing the weight by whatever I increased it by. However if you are much stronger or much weaker than I am, then the weight change from set to set will vary. Although it did help to find my pyramid chart because they are plastered all over my football team's weight room. biggrin:
IMO, the pyramid workout works is the best, not just for bench press, but for squats, hang cleans, and power cleans as well. Of course results will vary for every person, so it might not work as well for you as it does for me. For example I increased my bench max 10 lbs from my last max before, while some other guys only increased 5 lbs, or did not increase at all. Another factor that alters how much you increase is how hard you work. If you blow off one set, or just don't try to get that last rep, then you will hurt yourself in the long run. For most people though, the pyramid works great. It increases your chest size AND makes your chest hard as a rock. You will definitely look bigger, or as my black teammates say, "You get swoll, nigga!" biggrin: biggrin: |
Thanks Chronic. That gives me some good info. I doubt i'll beable to bench 250, or even 200 for that matter any time soon. My max is about 170 i believe but that was hydraulic which I find a lot easier than freeweight. freeweight max is probably somewhere around 150. I'm a pretty small guy though, I need some meat on my bones. I'm about 130lbs and 5'7" or so.
Once i'm out of college in 2 1/2 years then I'll probably go into some sort of army training. Thats why I ask the question. Long time till then, but If I can start off now and maintain that till then, I think I should be in pretty good shape. I'll have lots of time to get my strenght up. Thanks again. |
Well i promised myself that there is a war going on (a big war, not some crap Somalian war) when i turned 18, then i would enlist in the military, most likely the Army. If not i will go on my regular plans and attend College...
|
heh...to get my arms strong i jack off 10 times a day..5 with left..5 with right...now im ripped oOo:

I believe it. |
[quote:acb17]I'm a pretty small guy though, I need some meat on my bones. I'm about 130lbs and 5'7" or so. [/quote:acb17]
Your body size does have an effect on how high you can bench, but you don't have to be a huge monster man to be able to bench a lot. I'm 5'9" and 169 lbs, so you don't really need a whole lot of size. But don't worry about how much you can bench or whatever, your ability to run long distances and have good agility mean more to make it past BT. [quote:acb17]My max is about 170 i believe but that was hydraulic which I find a lot easier than freeweight.[/quote:acb17] Yeah, it is easier. I have not lifted a hydraulic weight in 2 years, I like the good 'ole freeweights the best. [quote:acb17]I doubt i'll beable to bench 250, or even 200 for that matter any time soon.[/quote:acb17] I dunno, if you really push it and dedicate yourself to do it every week, you could increase by at least 15 pounds within a month, that is if you don't regularly work out. When I first started working out in the 8th grade, I maxed 125 on bench. The end of my 8th grade year I maxed 175. Now I'm in the 11th, and my bench max slowed down, probably because I am short. There was this senior last year that was 5'5" and 150 lbs, and he benched 325 lbs. Everybody was so damn jealous of him, lol, because most people see the bench as your measurement of how big of a man you are, so everybody always tried to beat him. I think he won 1st place in a strength competition for high school athletics that year for highest bench pound-for-pound. BTW nice topic, I can talk all day about working out and getting in shape. |
ima freshman in highschool my rep bench is 160 for 12 and my rep squat is 295 for 10 im a bit bottom heavy....
|
Im small, light and skinny, but damnit i can get mad heh my arms are big from curls and all that shit but lifting weights wont help as much as running or calestenics (sit ups, pull ups, crunches) if you plan on going military
|
well im either joining a gen infantry reserve out here or an air reserve thats at a local CFB. Air would be alot easier to do physically, i mean all we have to do is tow old ww2 planes around cause even i know canada has a peice of shit air force. (DAMN YOU CRETIEN AND YOUR LIBERAL PUSSY GOVERNMENT)

I cant wait to laugh at all you fucking weight lifting retards when you find out 75% of physical training involves running.
situps, pushups, military pushups, pullups, even fucking IT (Incentive Training) doesn't mean shit to those grueling ass jogs/runs/group runs/timed runs/hikes/so on and so on. Let me tell you - I saw some fucked up shit that people were willing to put up with. One guy had a swollen ass foot, and didnt say shit about it... Why? Because he didnt want to go to the recovery platoon and have to deal with more weeks in bootcamp. Yes. It's THAT fucked up. |

totally agree with ed, going into the military you DO NOT need to be buff by any standards. its all endurance, running, sit ups, pull ups all that shit ed mentioned, lifting weights isnt a huge part

Yeah, it's not like your equipment will be made out of lead. |
Hey - if the averag joe wants to lift weights, and get 100 situps in 2 minuntes for the tests, go for it.
Lemme tell you though - that even if you are fucking fat and overweight, if you can run 5 miles then you're all set. That's IT! Seriously. You will hate yourself if you cant run without your legs giving out on you. I qould have rather done a DAY of all that exercising crap than have to deal with running. |
[quote:7f1a1]Yeah, it's not like your equipment will be made out of lead.[/quote:7f1a1]
The shit is NOT that heavy. Trust me. The marines will get your upper body into shape. Your legs on the other hand... |
I will join some aspect of the army, either regs or reserves, either way I'm joining the Paras and you have to be fit for them.
I run quite a lot, and I do swimming (but only once a week) and try to go to my school gym as much as possible, but I'm still a lanky streak of piss and I eat loads! I'm in the army cadets aswell and that improves your fitness. |
Im might join the army. But i dont know if i should go to college first or join the army first? If i do join the army im goin into airborne hopefully.

Marine Expiditionary Unit right here biggrin: M16: fire1: zooka:

like i said ill join reserves, cause, well canadian reserves are never called into action unless ww2 happens again lol.
I for one will NEVER join any real form of armed forces. I don't care much for going in and bombing the fuck out of people just because they want the oil we hold so dear.. I don't fight other peoples wars, i fight my own. And i refuse to endorse america's attacks on iraq, or the palistinaina people. As the good ol pledge thats G.W.Bush himself practically made up. I pledge alliegence to the flag o the united incorprates of america. And to the CEO's for with they stand. One nation under greed. With liberty and justice for oil. |
[quote="CSF_Jaizen":948f6]like i said ill join reserves, cause, well canadian reserves are never called into action unless ww2 happens again lol.
[/quote:948f6] Their actually doing a program where they send reserves on Peacekeeping missions and other out of country missions. If your a reservist, you can volunteer to take on a mission. About 1000 troops just left for Bosnia last month I think and they were all reserves. This is the first time they have tried this and if all goes well, they'll probably do it more often. So if your a reservist, and want to get out there, you haev a chance. I wouldn't doubt that the govt is doing this because we don't have the resources needed to put regular forces back out there. Sad really, that the liberals just totally ignore the facts. There have been so many studies. Practically every day a new one comes out either from CSIS or from the Auditer General that says the CF are about to collapse and they need money. But Chretien just seems to miss the point every time. He will not spend any more money on the Forces. God I hope he leaves sooner than 2004. |
I've considered going to officer candidate school for the marines. Anyone know what thats like?
|
I am the military. I have enough guns that makes my farm look like Waco texas all over again.

Marine Officers Bootcamp is hard as shit to get in to, and is basically Boot Camp 2 - except with more shit involved. Certainly, the benefits are great, but - As for all you cats who already have your "jobs" lined up for yourselves - think again. You may WANT that position, but if they think you should be slinging hash in a kitchen and cleaning pots and pans, thats where the fuck you'll be going. Dont kid yourself in thinking that any job is all lined up and ready for you. As far as the "War On Iraq" - I actually dont agree with some of the reasons why we are going in there. This seems like a lot of continuing the fathers work for Bush. There are interesting things coming from inside the Bush camp - on the front, they are saying an Intermediate Occupational force resembling that of the Afghanistan model would be used, but "insiders" but that model at the one used in Japan. Interesting indeed. Yes this man needs to be stripped of weapons which he feels confident in using, but I do not think we need to rewrite a countries way of life to suit ourselves. |

although I would really love to be a grunt and do all the harder work, if I join the regs I will apply for a scholarship (army pays me £500 a term at college and £1000 a year at university and then £3000 on arrival at Sandhurst) and go to RMA Sandhurst.
If I join TA, I might do Full Time Reserve Service (you basically become a reg for 6 months) but I probably won't go in for commision. Then (don't laugh) after a few years in TA or regs, if I want a new challenge, if I feel I'm mentally and physically fit enough, I will go for SAS |
