Why does the american army use ww2 "style" helmets

Just realised this last night when watching blackhawk down. The american helmets are virtually identical to the german ww2 helemt aside from the materials they are made of.

Only real difference is they don't cover the ears as much as the german helmets did. eek:

Low spark 10-16-2002 03:05 PM

Because the germans had a better designed helmet.

And in the 60+ years since the war all america could do to imporove it was to make it outta kevlar? eek:

Not to mention that most of the american weapons were german "inspired".

Spanish issue but same as German WWII

Well there are some modern helmets of countries around the world. They all take on some shape of the German Style WWII helmet.

Couldn't find an american one though. Maybe a someone can find a screen from the movie to compare, but I don't think they would be much different from the above helmets.

geRV 10-16-2002 03:37 PM

Its freaky to look at this stuff. The germans were so fuckin far ahead in terms of tech but with all their superior weapons it was the old numbers game that beat them ed:

Who woulda thought that the mg-42 would have been ripped off into an american machine gun years later? Or the old helmet design the germans used would still be in use 60 years later?

Innoxx 10-16-2002 03:49 PM

Well, the M60 has the same mechanics as the fg42, and the mg42 (MG3)design is still in use by the bundeswehr and other smaller countries. They were very far ahead of their time back in the day, that's why they held out as long as they did.

i have two things to say

in WW1 if we wouldnt have won it
one coast would prolly b talking in German the other in Japanesse

then in WW2
if that DumbFuck hitler would have given the control of the army to Rommel the war woulda either lasted alot longer or the axis woulda won

Innoxx 10-16-2002 04:10 PM

Rommel was relativley unknown at the start of WWII. He was not really discovered until the desert war, and by then Hitler had everything sorted out in his image.

Star85 10-16-2002 04:46 PM

What do you want us to do with the helmets?

10-16-2002 04:51 PM

....

goof
i was just saying my theory

intrestedviewer 10-16-2002 05:04 PM

its all the same except for the back, its curved up a bit so u can look up and it wont bother your neck, these things weigh less than ww2 issued though probably.

Nothing...

I was just showing some of the styles of present day compared to WWII because the original statement was:

"The american helmets are virtually identical to the german ww2 helemt aside from the materials they are made of."

found these 2 places http://www.skalman.nu/third-reich/milit ... istory.htm

our helmets are alot lighter than the old german ones, plus there is some diffrences i dont know of, but i know are there biggrin:

Miscguy 10-16-2002 10:18 PM

Look at millers Sig. There is a standard issue Army "k-pot". From what i can tell it looks just like the german helmet. Ears are well covered front is cut up for better view. It has the same basic form. The flare at the bottom is less pronounced on the Current US version but is still there. YOu cant see it because of the kevlar cover though.

Despite what you might think those k-pots are freaking heavy. They wear your neck out the first few road marches you do with em. Just pray you never get put in the front lean and rest with it on, that will tire your neck out really fast.

Front lean and rest - Drill sergeant code for "do some fucking push ups."

Ah DS Wade, and his classic, "do some fucking push ups"... the memories.

Germany had the best designed helmets for many years after WWII. Their helmets covered the ears and the neck, protecting the warer from shrapnel.

1. You're an idiot.
2. You're an idiot.

Japan were OUR allies before, during, and for some time after WW1...

actually I see a difference, the K-pot goes lower in the back, to meet the neck guard of your body armor. It also seems to sit better (proper fitting maybe) while the German one in the pic just sticks out on top of the head.

I hear you man, I got put in the front leaning rest once in the field for almost an hour. Kevlar, LBE, all the goodies. I lost my big mouth for a bit after that. biggrin:
