Obesity In Adults

What are your views on the growing number of obese adults in the world especially North America?

Or just adult obesity in general.

Sgt>Stackem 11-21-2002 08:34 AM

I've always been a pretty big guy. My father is a big man, so most of my heft comes from genetics.

That's not to say I can't drop a few tons. However, if I were to drop below, say, 230lbs, I'd look sick. My frame can easily carry 250-260 and look good.

I've lost 30lbs since July and I feel better than I have in years. Just watching what I eat a little closer, limiting portions, and exercising a bit more.

It's a problem that needs attention. The physical side of it is important (gotta look good to get the ladies...heh), but the important part is being healthier so you avoid things such as heart problems, hypertension, and diabetes later in life.

More Money to spend=More spent of food=More food eaten=Higher weigth.
Theres a difference between being overweight and being obese. Bieng overweight isnt really as bad as it sounds, because someone who is 6'4 is suppose to weigh aout 180 lbs. And if you ever knew a guy who is 6'4 that figure is B.S.

Oh oh, I'm 6'4 210 lbs. Your equation is almost right, but you left out a couple factors. More junk food eaten + less physical exersice = Higher weight.

What make me sick is at some store they have electric carts with baskets for physically handicapped people, but I never see a handicapped peson in one, what I do see is some grossly obese women or men driving around in them because it too much work to walk with all that weight.

ninty 11-21-2002 02:28 PM

People at my college use those airport bags with wheels and the long handle to carry their books around. I mean, how much lazier can you get?

Genetics is 70% responsible for the way you are. But that doesn't mean people can't exercise and live a healthy life.

If they wanna get fat, fine by me. Their gonna die sooner than me. And i'm not gonna feel sorry for them. I don't know if I would go as far as to call it a disease though. I think Laziness and people mixed are a disease. Not obesity.

SoLiDUS 11-21-2002 03:37 PM

Bah. Stop stuffing your big fat faces with high-fat, high-carb meals and you
might be able to see your penis one day. Seriously folks, it's not very hard:
just eat high to mid protein, mid carb and lowsaturated fat meals and train
3 nights a week. I'm 5"11, 185lbs of muscle so I know a thing or two about
nutrition...

Want to lose fat ?

1- Lots of small meals (6 throughout the day)
2- High protein intake
3- Low SATURATED fat intake
4- Make sure you don't meet your daily caloric need
5- TRAIN! PLAY A SPORT! FUCK! DO SOMETHING!

biggrin:

11-21-2002 03:50 PM

there is also a great difference between being fat and overweight.
probably every weightlifter/football player/whatever is overweight, you must remember muscle is heavier than fat.

people who need wheelchairs because they are fat...dude thats just wrong

According to some health charts, I'm NOT in my "target zone" but you better
take a good look at me: I'm NOWHERE NEAR fat. My name is muscle, PURE
muscle. I hope this is what you meant, otherwise, what the hell was it that u
were trying to say !?! eek:

well im a little bit tubby so all i can say is sometimes its not what you eat its your metabolism. My friend and I can eat the exact same amount of food (esp during summer when he is over here all the time) but he may loser some weight and im more likely to gain it.

anyways in north america, i saw a commercial describing it.

America, land of the all you can eat buffet
with millions of starving people every day.

11-22-2002 04:14 AM

I eat a hell lot of junk food but I'm not fat luckily, my metoblism is really fast and I work out everyday.

SoLiDUS 11-22-2002 04:38 AM

Your metabolism most likely won't stay like this forever: consider the fact
that I used to eat 8 mcdonalds cheeseburgers a day and never gained a
pound of fat. Then, my metabolism slowed down... and I had to start lookn'
at what I was eating...

*points at person*

It'll happen to YOU! evil:

Obesity is rampant, I've heard that Canton Ohio was voted the happiest place to live in America, but it also is the most unhealthiest through studies. It has a lot to do with the food, we have tons of restaraunts, fast food joints, of all varieties and cultures. Food makes people happy, but it also makes them unhealthy.

The low carb- high protein diet that SoliDuS keeps mentioning will work for those who have time to work out and actually do work out.

I'm 5'6" 145 pounds, once was pure muscle but it has all turned into 'flab'. SoLiDus, the problem with your technique is you have to work out forever for you to keep yourself in shape. Actually, it hurts you more in the end to do that. It's just as bad as being overweight, your joints become very tender and break easy, bones become brittle faster. Swimming has been the best exercise for me, it doesn't put stress on your joints one bit, and you still get the muscles you want. Unfortunatly, after I finished High School, I was no longer working out or swimming, and turned into flab.

People who get overweight CAN stop themselves, cut down on Pop, Fried foods, and pastas. When you do eat them, try to eat foods of the same type, because its easier for your stomach to break down the foods. The problem is, there is a myth that you should 'Eat all 5 food groups'. This is actually worse for you. Sure, you can eat all 5 food groups, and should, but not at one sitting.

Tripper 11-22-2002 11:46 PM

Playing a sport helps the change in your metabolism. Have one less burger, soft drink, and fries a day. It'll go down itself. freak:

Bullet Sponge 11-23-2002 01:18 AM

Eat right , workout like mad , and DIE anyway . We're all mortal , it's gonna happen to you too . If your weight is an actual health problem , then you should worry . I just hate it when people get down on themselves 'cause they don't look like the guy/girl in the Bowflex ads . Now where did I put that f$#king bag of Cheetos .

Why must I work out indefinitely to keep myself in shape by taking small
but nutritious meals throughout the day ? Can you please expound on that?
You have one hell of a job to do if you want to convince me that NOT doing
so is bad for you and ultimately, will lead to "tender joints and bones that
will break and become brittle faster".

"Hurts more in the end" huh? Again, expound: I have yet to understand
what you bring forward. Obviously, genius, your nutrition and intake varies
on your level of activity, but the guideline remains the same: want to lose
fat? Go under your daily caloric intake without starving yourself, meaning
you have to take more and smaller meals throughout the day to keep your
body "full" and keep your body burning.

Less (but bigger) meals throughout the day means your body will store
more of it, because it knows it doesn't get as much as fast: consequently,
you will pack a bit more than with my plan. Care to give me details on YOUR
plan, which seems to work so well?

Your form of exercise (lifting weights and jogging) is very strenous on your joints. That is why I said I found swimming to be the best exercise I had.
Building and maintaining muscle and bone mass REQUIRES weight-bearing exercise. Overdoing weight-bearing exercise can tear down muscle tissue instead of building it. It can also damage bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments.

However, if you ever find you don't have much time in your work week to exercise, your fucked, you have to live with your muscle turning into nothing, and everything will just go back to the way it was. Read up on Muscle Atrophy GENIUS!

If you continue to consume the same amount of calories per day as you do while exercising, you will GAIN weight, because you are not burning it off.

How hard is that? Its scientifically proven so why are you asking me to prove it? Hell if I know, it's just the way it is.

Who the fuck said I had a plan. I pretty much mentioned I DIDN'T have a plan since high school. My day consists of this. Get up, go to work, eat breakfast or not, eat lunch or not, go to school, go home, go to sleep. That's my plan, I no longer work out, and I eat what I've always eaten, actually healthier foods than what I used to eat. But I still have the fucking love handles, mainly because I used to eat a lot while exercising and now I have troubles calming myself down from eating. I probably have days where I eat a bit more than I should, and days I eat less than I should. I don't watch it, I could care less. As long as I don't become and obsessive eater, I'm fine.

My conclusion, SoLiDuS is smart! Listen to him, he's got muscles!

Atkins bro, or anything like it. You can take these kind of diets and make them personal. I am 5'10 and used to weigh 230 pounds, mostly fat. Im now down to 185 and have become much more lean. Im only 20, but I know the way I ate for the last few years is going to bite me in the butt. Now its staying on a reasonably low carb diet, with cardio and some weight lifting. (Swimming is a bizatch!) Not to mention AF boot camp next month. My motivation? Did you fawking see the pic of my fiancee I posted?? hehe, HEALTH. Its all about changing your way of life rather than looking for the quick fix. People hear that and say no no no no I want to lose 30 pounds in a month. Hey its possible, but its all about where you go from there.

To get back to the subject, I didnt need any articles. I can take a quick drive around my town and its painfully obvious. We gettin fat.

11-25-2002 11:23 AM

All these "just put down the hotdog fatty" people seem to have glossed over what our resident Marxist Jazien said - there is such a thing as METABOLISM. I eat like a fucking pig, and I still weigh 160lbs and look like I dont eat shit. My twin sister on the other hand - well lets just say noones gonna confuse her with an anorexic. Bottom line is most obesity does come from a whacked out metabolism, where it takes folks just far too long to burn off that food - where folks like me will run through it fairly quickly.

But yea, there are some fucks who are just fat for fats sake.
