Good mobo

What is your opinion on the best mobo out there? I would be using this computer mainly for gaming, and I'm most likely getting an Pentium Processor.

Old Reliable 12-14-2002 01:30 PM

are you going to build your own?

12-14-2002 01:39 PM

asus

The Counter-Sniper 12-14-2002 02:19 PM

I'm in the process of building my first system. 2 of the best motherboards out there are. . .

ASUS http://www.asus.com/

and

Soyo http://www.soyousa.com/

A good place to go that I'm using for hardware research is http://www.extremetech.com
are you going to build your own?[/quote:3f923]

Yes.

My eye is on a Asus. Looking for a good mobo that supports DIMM or RIMM slots, NO audio embedded, or anything else.

Most likely going INTEL for a processor. Not sure.

Bleuachdu 12-14-2002 02:41 PM

What chipset do you plan on using?

Zap. USMC 12-14-2002 03:55 PM

Not sure, Bleuachdu. Most likely an Intel Chipset since I'm getting an Intel processor... doesn't really matter to me, as long as it's stable and does the job.

What do you guys think of RIMM slots, RD RAM? I hear RD RAM is the fastest out there, but is it stable?

Old Reliable 12-14-2002 04:08 PM

I have no idea how to build my own computer, anyone care to assist?

intrestedviewer 12-15-2002 01:45 AM

If you plan to get a geforce 4 get a mobo that has 8x AGP slot so it goes as fast as it can swordfight:

this one looks bad ass http://www.soyousa.com/images/products/ ... hspecs.jpg

IF you're interested in the RD ram, check out the Intel 850 chipset.

A good magazine to begin familiarizing yourself with hardware and it's funtionality, interaction etc. . .is Maximum PC.

http://www.maximumpc.com/

Also Computer Power User

http://www.computerpoweruser.com/

Also, the site I recommended before, Extremetech

http://www.extremetech.com/

This is where I'm getting all of my information.

ASUS P4T533 biggrin:

pest 12-16-2002 12:33 PM

Asus. the highest quality without the raping soyo likes to administer. A7V8X is what i got, but there are better out now. Get one that supports DDR2. Stay away from epox. Everytime I look at bench marks they always complain that the epox wouldnt work.

Old Reliable 12-16-2002 10:17 PM

Thanks for those links....I am just unsure what kind of case to buy etc.

Zap. USMC 12-16-2002 10:24 PM

reliable... go with thermaltake cases

http://www.newegg.com for the best prices.

Old Reliable 12-17-2002 12:31 PM

Which one do you suggest, oh and is there a program I can use to find out all the hardware I have?

Bazooka_Joe 12-17-2002 03:55 PM

Newegg sucks. Old, goto http://www.pricewatch.com

for a case, get at least a 300W power supply, 350 if your going P4. It should have at least 2 5.25 bays, and 2 3.25 bays. My best suggestion are these two:

Price: Antec SX630II - http://www.pricewatch.com/2/74/960-5.htm (4th from bottom)

Best: Antec Plus660AMG - http://www.pricewatch.com/2/74/960-10.htm (4th from bottom)

pest 12-17-2002 04:10 PM

Joe - used to think the same as you about newegg and pricewatch. Until I built my pc. Newegg is solid and usually only a couple of dollars more than the lowest pricewatch price. They also deliver ANYWHERE in the US within 3 days (california to florida). Not the possible 3 weeks I got last time with the lowest cost pricewatch vendor (with good third party ratings no less). I will pay the insignificant premium for newegg every time now, but that is just me. I think I paid an extra $20 for $500 worth of components (processor, ram, mobo, hdd, plus a couple peices for a friend) and got them all quick and from one vendor. I would hate to have to track orders from 4 different vendors to save a couple bucks a piece.

So this would be a good model to follow? http://www.maximumpc.com/reprints/repri ... l#shopping
