Now having post that. I say let them stay in your country. Afterall, do you wanna piss off the arabian community more? Here we go with the Nazi comparisons. Not even close people. In the opinions of many, our lax immigration enforcement is what caused 9/11. If these people were not citizens and did not have proper paperwork, they were detained. I don't see any problem with that. When it is sorted out, they will be released. Some of you take this attitude that since America espouses freedom, it should not protect itself. What is the matter with you? Ask any of these people if they would like to go back to their birth nations, and you would hear a resounding "NO!". This is something that needs to be done, because the U.S. has hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals within it's borders illegally, who do not take it upon themselves to do the right thing and come in and say "Listen, my visa is about to expire and I need to find out how to go about remaining in the U.S. legally". So now they have been ordered to. So be it.

The fact that they can openly complain about it shows that they are in a land of freedom. Just my 2 pennies.

I'm going to ask you this. What would your solution be? My Arab friends say that while they are a little unnerved by what is happening, they agree that their needs to be better immigration control in terms of documentation and they can understand why detainment is necessary for those who are NOT CITIZENS who are not documented. The United States has gone out of it's way to protect the rights of all those residing within it's borders regardless of national origin. Now, because we try to enforce immigration laws which were ALWAYS on the books but not properly utilized, we're Nazi's? Come on!

I'll ask the question again, to anyone. WHAT WOULD YOUR SOLUTION BE?

The zealotrous actions of a few have stigmatized the Arab people. God knows, that is a shame, because they are no different than anyone else, some of my best friends are of Arabic origin. What the U.S. government is saying is this. "OK, we have Arab nationals, who are NOT American citizens, who could be a potential threats to the national security. We have poor accountability for them and right now, they can be considered a potential threat, based upon what we have seen in the past 10 years."

This is what Al-Qaeda counted on. Go to the U.S. overstay your visa, they won't do anything. Something had to be done. The kind approach did not work, so now a little harshness is being implemented. We need to sit back and see what transpires. If anyone has a better solution I would be glad to hear it.

I got a better solution, stop blowing up other people's countries.

Hmmm, 500 arrested in an area that the article says contains 600,000 Iranian immigrants. Sounds pretty statistically insignificant. Therefore two things are obvious. One is that the vast majority of the immigrants had the proper visas. Two that the US government allows vast numbers of non-citizens to live and work in the US and treats them more fairly than most, if not all, of the other countries in the world. Even though we are in a state of war and even though we were attacked we still allow all of these people to live here, for the most part unmolested.

BTW - I know a few Cajuns who say that Canada doesn't have a history of tolerating other cultures etc. Maybe I ought to get one of them to post here. (For those not in the know - the reason Louisiana is heavily Cajun is because Canada rounded them all up and kicked them out of the country - Canada's loss, our gain, great food.)

This cracks me up, especially in light of the Canadian arguments that gun registration laws take guns out of the hands of criminals.

However, I agree with the idea that ALL illegals should be sent packing. I think, as a country, our strength has been that we are populated by the type of people who had the courage, determination, and love of freedom to leave their ancestral homes and come to America. So I am always in favor of having a rodust immigration policy. However, it is critical that new arrivals follow the law. I don't care if their Iranian or British - if they don't have follow the law they should be sent back. I also don't mind that, since we have now seen the light and are starting to crack down, that we start by looking at immigrants from countries prone to terrorism.

Hmm we give the Arabs tens of millions, and we have given Israel over ONE BILLION in one year.

The facit is, we (America) stuck our nose in a situation before truly understanding the people and cultures involved. Our weak foreign policy got us burned big time, and now we aren't quite sure how to deal with it.

I have to say the MAIN reason behind the arrests is for national security reasons. We have millions of immigrants that are not even known to us living here off of us. I dont blame them for the arrests. If they are clean, let them go....if they have a past...deport or detain for further investagation. As for Iraq, after we get rid of the problem there, we need to go to North Korea next. They are pretty much saying we have nukes and will continue to make them, you cant stop us......thats a slap in the face to the UN.

being "arrested" means nothing until they charge you with something.

American cops are paraniod sumbitches who handcuff people for the stupidest "crimes" (many of which don't have a jail term), such as teens being out after city curfew, drunk drivers, etc.

I'll bet that most of these people will be verified as legit and released promptly.
