I think it was some type of camera lense or something, he talked about taking pics with it and stuff.... not sure though

It was a really old form of recording/playing music. It was like a cylindercal record. Hence why he had the old school record player sitting there with it. That was one of the oldest forms of recording and playing back music. Only preceeded by a metal cyinder.
