One of the reasons the Irish hate british troops
In the early 1900's, the Royal Irish Constabulary, England's police force in Ireland, was having a difficult time recruiting. Its barracks were the targets of repeated raids and ambushes by Irish rebels. By 1919, English authorities advertised for men who were willing to "face a rough and dangerous task." That task was to supplement the dwindling ranks of the RIC in patrolling an increasingly hostile Ireland.
The English recruits to the RIC were mainly the unemployed veterans of World War I. Their principal motivation: employment for ten shillings a day. When the first recruits arrived in Ireland on March 25, 1920, after three months of training, they looked like the irregulars which they were. Since there were not enough RIC uniforms for the new men, they were equipped with khaki service dress supplemented with constabulary uniforms, so that they appeared in a strange mixture of khaki and dark green, some with khaki tunic and green trousers, others in all khaki, some with civilian hats, but most with green caps and black leather belts of the RIC. These uniforms led to their being called "Black and Tans," after a famous pack of hounds. Limerick gets credit for this appellation. The Black and Tans, although they served in the constabulary, never acted as policemen. Their service experience had been in trench warfare on foreign soil. Absent in their background was the constable's role as servant to the community in the protection of life and property. The Black and Tans acted as an occupation army. They had signed on for an indefinite period of service with no pension rights and ineffective discipline. Eventually over 2000 Black and Tans were distributed over Ireland to strengthen police posts, to make Ireland "hell for rebels to live in." On June 17, 1920, Lt. Col. Smyth was appointed division commander of the RIC for Munster. Below is part of his speech to his constables: "....If a police barracks is burned or if the barracks already occupied is not suitable, then the best house in the locality is to be commandeered, the occupants thrown into the gutter. Let them die there - the more the merrier. Police and military will patrol the country at least five nights a week. They are not to confine themselves to the main roads, but make across the country, lie in ambush and, when civilians are seen approaching, shout "Hands up!" Should the order be not immediately obeyed, shoot and shoot with effect. If the persons approaching carry their hands in their pockets, or are in any way suspicious-looking, shoot them down. You may make mistakes occasionally and innocent persons may be shot, but that cannot be helped, and you are bound to get the right parties some time. The more you shoot, the better I will like you, and I assure you no policeman will get into trouble for shooting any man ..." Orders such as these help to explain why the Black and Tans have such a wretched reputation among the Irish. Nice speech huh. mad: |
I remember reading about that in history class (was meant to be learning about royalty during world war 2 but fuck that crap, so i chose to look busy while learning something more interesting)
It is rediculous some of the things that have been left unfinished and unpunished, we would still take a 90 year old who was a nazi in world war 2 and try them for war crimes over 50 years ago, yet we would not touch anyone for the orders giving in ireland about shooting civilians. Its things like this that people dont understand or are unaware of when they object to things like the memorial you posted a while ago, people saying it was sick that a memorial was raised in honour of those "terrorists". They dont seem to realise that it isnt all one way, and that the british government has fucked these people more times and in more ways than jenna jameson. |

I suppose the brits just don't like to be portrayed other than the "jolly good show old boy anyone for a spot of tea" shit theyre known for. |

I happen to be a celtic fan but i am athiest, the religous backgrounds mean nothing to me, and the truth be told mean nothing today, except of course the mindless supporters still think its all about catholics v protestants. Where is your proof that anything has been thrown at 5 year olds? or wait, maybe you mean things are thrown at adults who act like 5 year olds, in which case you will have had your fair share of shit thrown at you. |
I think hes referrring to the school in ardoyne and it was loyalists (the ones that believe theyre british) throwing stuff at catholic kids.

Quick History Lesson.
Forgive my gross ignorance on this matter, but please bear with me, i wish to learn.
#1 - Could i trouble someone for a brief history of the conflict. I'm not an idiot, i know alot of it is religious, but i know not details. #2 - The Scottish and English used to hate each other, but they get along now. Why doesn't England offer a similar deal to ireland, and if they have, why do the irish not accept it? that's about it. apologies if my ignorance on such an important matter in my own commonwealth offends oOo: |
christ I hate these fucking shitty threads, why can't everyone just smoke some weed, get high, and forget all about it!
|
Hey I wonder if this thread is controversial?
Im a Brit and I'm proud of it so kma nothings gonna change that, just like you guys are proud to be Americans, Canadians, Australians and Irish etc.. Do I agree with what they did? No. Are all English people like that? No. Do I agree with how the I.R.A act? No. If you want an indepandant Ireland go for it, but try not to blow people up in the process. You only have 1 life... |

I don't mean forget about all the horrible incidents, but like Bunny said, not all English people are like that, in fact, about 1% of English people are like that, in fact probably much less. In every country, there's always a small fraction of people who's views are extreme, and unfortunately, some of these people get their own way

I love England as a country, it has great countryside and quaint little postcard villages. What i dislike are the minority of people who are stuck up snobs, plain rude and look down on you like scum. (same could apply for most famous people though)
And while Scotland and England get along these in the manner that we dont field open battles with bows and arrows and cavalry charges and hit and run attacks fighting for land anymore, but the so called "british" government still screws us right over. And its hellish because we cant take our complaints to the battle fields. When Scotland won its independence at the battle of bannockburn 1314, do you know how we lost our independence? F*cking bribes! Our scottish nobels were paid off and given land in exchange for signing over scotland back to britian, and the traitoring bastards did it, much to the objections of the riots afterwards. No politics, no voting, just sheer bullshit. and it seems that today, things work the same way. except this time its the politics thats bullshit. |

yup. Robert the Bruce.

It was william wallace and Andrew Murray who led the battle of stirling bridge, which wasnt fought in an open field as Braveheart would have you beleive, you know, when he does his "you may take our lives but youll never take our freedom speech"....
Wallace and Murray waited on a place called abby craig while the english army crossed the bridge, then when half the army was over, they attacked, slaughtered the english on their side of the bridge, and then the english on the other side couldnt aid their soldiers as the bridge was packed with corpses, many drowned in the river trying to flee the scots. That was wallaces first victory in battle, murray was killed though. The Wallace Monument was built on abby craig. Robert the bruce led the battle of bannockburn, which is near stirling.... He was half scottish half irish in regards to his parents, but there is norman, viking etc etc in him if you want to go back a little further. he was born in scotland though, so that makes him scottish. |
