*sad news* shuttle Columbia breaks up over Texas

Seven astronauts aboard space shuttle.

Houston, Texas (CNN) -- The space shuttle Columbia, with seven astronauts aboard, broke up as it descended over central Texas Saturday toward a planned landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Search-and-rescue teams from the Dallas-Fort Worth area were alerted and area residents were urged to stay away from any possible debris from the shuttle, which may be hazardous, said NASA public affairs officer James Hartfield.

The Bush administration was preparing to convene a "domestic event" conference among all domestic and military agencies that may be involved in the next step.

An administration official said the shuttle's altitude -- over 200,000 feet -- made it "highly unlikely" that the shuttle fell victim to a terrorist act.

NASA officials said they last had contact with the shuttle about 9 a.m. EST, and it had been expected to touch down at about 9:16 a.m. EST.

Video of the shuttle tracking over Dallas showed multiple vapor trails, but NASA spokesman Kyle Herring said it was too early to determine the source.

Steve Petrovich, a police officer in Palestine, Texas, said he heard "a rumble and boom" at about 8 a.m. CDT (9 a.m. EST).

Jim Hubbs of New Boston, Texas, said he heard police discussing over a police scanner "a smoking object going southeast" that disappeared in the Bowie County area near the Arkansas state line.

Officials said no tracking data were available.

Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon, was among the seven-person crew. There was no official reaction from the Israeli government, but a Defense Ministry spokeswoman said, "Like everyone else, we are feeling terrible, hoping the slightest hope that still remains at this stage will become a reality."

Columbia is the oldest of NASA's shuttle fleet, first launched in 1981. It was on its 28th mission.

Maybe it is a terrorist act. Seeing how an Israelite was a memer of the crew.

Old Reliable 02-01-2003 09:32 AM

hm unfortunately, going in a shuttle is a big risk. i cant believe this has happened the footage looks like it was already burning when it entered the atmosphere

how could it be a terrorist act? theres no way a foreign object could enter the space shuttle

Yes, there was scrotum, but it was going down the shitter..SO DONT RUIN THIS ONE.

Vance 02-01-2003 09:49 AM

I live about 30 miles south of Houston! I have family around the Dallas area and they said they heard a big rumble and saw multiple (about 10) little streams overhead. So far no debris has fallen near them

Pfc.Green 02-01-2003 09:58 AM

Also (most probably already know this) but there is no chance of survivors, because of the altituted and speed.

Old Reliable 02-01-2003 10:01 AM

there is no way anyone could have survived that

GreenEggs&Pot 02-01-2003 10:06 AM

I live in the Dallas area, I did see the white streaks in the sky. At first I thought maybe it was an air show of some kind, but then I saw all the stuff from CNN. This is very sad indeed...

Jedi Marksman 02-01-2003 10:09 AM

At 200,000 feet it was not a terrorist attack. It's a risk just leaving the ground in a plane, let alone going into space. At over 12,000 MPH you can be sure no one survived. What a tragedy. hake:

Pfc.Green 02-01-2003 10:15 AM

Nasa has just lowered the flag next to its operation center to half-stalf thus officially mourning the loss of the astronauts.

Sergeant_Scrotum 02-01-2003 10:20 AM

i cant belive some idiots thought it was shot down by surface to air missiles hake:

alilk 02-01-2003 10:20 AM

well....

as u can guess the news here (israel)
are not too happy nither but some of us here guessed that this would happen we even had a little bet in school the crappy luck of israel stikes again

Sergeant_Scrotum 02-01-2003 10:40 AM

thats sick, why would you bet on wheather the shuttle would blow up or not?

Art Attack 02-01-2003 10:41 AM

Yeah! no one is coming out of that, even if they get control over it, trying to land in Dallas and all.damn, I just hope the find the shuttle.

Pfc.Green 02-01-2003 10:42 AM

[quote="Art Attack":d14db]Yeah! no one is coming out of that, even if they get control over it, trying to land in Dallas and all.damn, I just hope the find the shuttle.[/quote:d14db] no offence but do you have any idea at all of what happened?

GreenEggs&Pot 02-01-2003 10:50 AM

They won't find the shuttle, it's in a 100 pieces. Let's just hope nobody gets hurt by the debris.

alilk 02-01-2003 10:50 AM

hey!

hey don't get me wrong we didn't want this some of us just felt this kinda this is posible and might even really appen so we as a joke made a bet

cheeses ppl i think you are forgating that the shuttle didn't crush yesterday .... well i guess our cultures are somewhat diffrent so we take dark humor diffrently hell even now some of us have a joke a bout this cause we say the word space in hebrew the same way we say the word casulty so technecly we say "eilan ramon- the first israeli space in space"
don't attack me on this , this is just the way we do somethings here hell we even have like 100 holocoust jokes.

ToeNail 02-01-2003 11:00 AM

This IS offtopic of this thread,BUT they don't called it offtopic BS for nothing...anyways can someone please tell me how put a customized head on a models skin?I just cant figure it out...

alilk 02-01-2003 11:01 AM

Fuck off, you disrespectful shit-head.

Gh0st 02-01-2003 11:02 AM

If you guys had watched the news a few weeks ago you would have seen that on take off of the Columbia a foam piece from one of the boosters/tank etc fell off and hit the wing... they said it didn't do much damage but that probably caused the breakup

Okay, I understand.

alilk 02-01-2003 11:04 AM

hmm

i find it hard to belive that the little piece of foam is what caused this and besides NASA knew about that piece and if it would to cause any troubles they would of done something about it

Art Attack 02-01-2003 11:06 AM

NASA was releasing info and they said quote "The shuttle is gone, let's leave it at that for now"

You'd be surprised how little it can take to cause an accident like this.

alilk 02-01-2003 11:08 AM

it might of been something small that caused this.
but still NASA knew about that it can't be that they overlooked it.

[LoNe R@nGeR] 02-01-2003 11:13 AM

But they repaired the thing that came off before, and said it wouldn't be a problem...

Gh0st 02-01-2003 11:14 AM

but still they might have thought it wasnt that bad when truely it might have been.... btw this is the foam that is sprayed on the outside of the tanks to keep them cool and is usually fozen... so when it hit the wing it could have left some minimal damage that was made worse during re entry...

Gh0st 02-01-2003 11:15 AM

and this was during takeoff so there was no way to repair it until it comes back to earth.... unless they do it in space...

Jedi Marksman 02-01-2003 11:17 AM

At those speeds and add in the variables of space which is not a controlled environment, there are so many chances for things to go wrong. If a hole the size of a baseball can cause a jet to depressurize and explode, then who is to say what could have caused it. The Columbia was the "old workhorse" of the fleet. We've lost astronauts and a pliece of history. there are 3 left now:

Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.

Arkan 02-01-2003 11:23 AM

Sad news indeed. Reminds me of the Challenger explosion that happened in '86. It's a shame the astronauts were lost especially the "guests" who were on board. Instead of flaming, why not say a lil' prayer for the families affected. And if you don't believe in God, how bout showing respect and leaving the flaming out of this one thread?

Well said Arkan.

just heard the news also. what a tragety. may god be with the crew of 7 and their loved ones. its a sad day in space exploration.
