seriosly though my choice is either the .50 caliber M-2 BMG or the Bofors type AA gun.
The Ma deuce was designed before WWII, and there was not a damn thing wrong with it, they still use em on tanks, Hummers, and copters today.

The Bofors was either licensed or copied by just about every country in WWII except Japan. The US and UK used the 40mm variant, the Germans and Soviets used 37mm Bofors for anti-aircraft on ships and truck/halftrack mounted.

I'm not a military historian or gun enthusiast like many of you, so essentially my opinion is worthless. However I think the AK-47 is one of if not THE most influential modern rifles.

well im thinking the M1 garand, than again the M4 is a great weapon, can be modded to hell and back, great design, very durable and reliable. But than the MP5 is a great weapon to so omg i dont know!

Personally, I think the best guns are the Colt M4 Carbine and the H&K MP5 Sub-Machine Gun.

I gotta agree with the AK47. The high quality ones (not the POS hungarian, romanian, etc.) are very durable, accurate and relatively inexpensive weapons. The m16 is a nice weapon, but smaller caliber and prone to jams. The germans and isrealis make some nice automatic weapons and nice close quarters stuff. But if i had to defend my home from intruders, give me a shotgun everytime.

As to the best weapon, I agree that the criteria are far too variable and subjective. Best all around military rifle, ever? FAMAS best of its erea? Garand. Best by the standards it set and respect it garnered amoung the finest riflemen in the world (US Marines) Springfield. Best for being idiot proof and evidence that a chimp can kill sloppy AK-47. also the most influential by virtue of being so simple that a pakastani with scrap metal an open hearth and muscle powered machine tools can crank out 5 a week without breaking a sweat.
Finally, wtf is with the bofors, if u wanna include anti aircraft artillery as a gun or firearm....then.....well.....jesus nevermind.
