running a DHCP...have dynamic IP..
[This message has been edited by Quik (edited January 07, 2002).] |
You have to make sure you open up the necessary ports through your router. Default ports for MOH-AA are: 12201, 12202, 12203, 12210. I think there is 1 more, but I cannot think of it off hand.
If you do not know how to open the ports, contact me, and I'll walk you through it. What is your DSL connection upload and download speed? |
May need your help on opening the ports. 1.5 Meg down and 275k up. Thanks!!

You can always put the sever on the "DMZ" port. This will not "protect" the box from prying eyes but is a fast way to host a couple of games and then move it out of the DMZ once your done playing MOH:AA. You will not have to worry about ports but your box will be exsposed to the internet.
|
Get the latest driver from Linksys, then set it for Dynamic Port Forwarding. This will eliminate the need for worrying about ports for every different game.
|
Sounds good. How do I do that? Doesn't the ports have to be specified?
|
No. That's the point of 'dynamic' port forwarding. The router keeps track of legitimate requests (i.e. ones that originate on your end) and lets responses through. Linksys added this functionality in a driver update and it is great. It is simple to set up. I don't remember exactly but go into the router setup (i.e. 192.168.1.1) and look around for it. I think you just need to check a box. Kewl, eh?
|
I looked but in order to "forward", DHCP has to be disabled. This is complex. Any other suggestions?
|
Any suggestions on how to set up a server using a Linksys router? I've got DSL, P4 1.8, 512 RDRAM, GF3. Thanks in advance!

Are you running DHCP from the LinkSys or do you have static IPs?
|
what is so complex about disabling dhcp?
|
sorry, didn't mean to sound abrupt.
What I meant is, just assign an IP address to each computer in your LAN and do away with DHCP. Unless I'm being clueless here, which is totally possible. But even if it is a little tedious to set up the ip's, if you play a few different online games it may be worth it. Especially since you will have the increased security that dynamic port forwarding provides, e.g. no unauthorized activity through ports that are permanently open. |
If I disable DHCP, the router wont be able to get IP I thought?
|
Thank you very much for advice!! What kind of connection do you have and how many ppl should I set up a server for with DSL?
|
If you aren't going to run your server dedicated, limit it to five or six players max. Personally, I can only host four ppl without someone complaining about lag. Just experiment alittle.

NOTE: Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. There was a bug in earlier versions with port forwarding.
There's a couple ways you can do this. Disabling DHCP is not necessary (as long as you have the latest firmware). Firstly, find out your NIC IP address (Win2k/XP - type "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt, Win9x/ME - type "winipcfg" in Start -> Run). In the router settings, click on the "Advanced" tab on the far right, then click on the "Forwarding" tab. Here, you'll see several columns of settings you can enter. On the first line, enter the port 12201 into the first box, then 12203 into the second box (port range setting, these are the ports MoH:AA uses by default). The next box leave set to "Both", and the last, enter your IP address (192.168.1.xxx by default). Click the "Apply" button at the bottom, and you should now be able to run a server just fine. Another way is to use the DMZ option (but provides less security for your network). On the "DMZ Host" tab in Advanced, just enter the same IP here, click "Apply", and host away. I have this same router, and I have run a MoH:AA server through it. So, if you have an questions, just ask. Have fun, WeRD [This message has been edited by WeRD69 (edited January 09, 2002).] |
hmm, i tried everything and it won't work for me.
not DMZ or ip forwarding |
