Case Mod Idea: Possible, or not?

I recently was looking into the Asetec VapoChill case, which uses a refridgeration system to feed cold air through a insulated hose, directly on top of your processor. Doing this, can bring temperatures for your CPU down to as low as -40F. Of coarse, something this powerful was designed for overclocking, not every day PC-usage.

Anyways, the case turns out to be about $600 (the one I want), give or take 50 bucks. Hell no, I'm not paying that much for just a damn case! So, I thought about this. . .

I have a mini-fridge in my room (Some of you are already probably laughing.) Do you think it would be possible to take the parts out of the case (Power supply, mobo, everything) and install it in the case for running my PC? The fridge at its coldest is probably about 25 - 30F. ANd with all the fans I have in my case now, it's only at about 60F. So, I want to move it all to the fridge, and run it from the inside of there. What do you think?

i am not sure how you would wire that up but if you are going to put it in a fridge you have to take in consideration the condensation

Bazooka_Joe 03-05-2003 04:10 PM

Hrm. . well, I forgot some things bout the fridge that I should mention:

-It is totally plastic, except the screws holding it together of coarse.

-It can hold 72 cans of soda (or beer!), and is about 3 feet high by 2 and 1/2 feet wide (About 3 cases, side by side)

I don't know the brand/model off the top of my head, Ill get more info when I get home.

But how would it condensate? The heat from the parts Vs the cold air?

Milla 03-05-2003 04:12 PM

dunno joe chances of condensation are good, i wouldnt risk it ed:

descry 03-05-2003 04:12 PM

Maybe a good idea but it will look pretty retarded.

Old Reliable 03-05-2003 04:14 PM

refrigerators are full of condensation, every time you open it up........it would be risky. try and see if you know someone who has done it or find a site

Old Reliable 03-05-2003 04:14 PM

better yet go to http://www.motherboards.org biggrin:

if you try this idea...you better be aware of the moisture factor involved..it might work too well..the cold air generated by the fridge and the warmer air in the box will create moisture..after you fire it up and 15 minutes later you got fog in your computer...YOU GOT A PROBLEM...just kiddin about the fog but the moist air is for real..could corode parts on the mother board and other components.

cameltoe 03-05-2003 07:23 PM

if you do that vacume seal all the parts, that way the wetness stays off?

and that will surely hold in the heat..lol. why bother.

geRV 03-05-2003 07:41 PM

Won't work, afaik the compressor of the fridge won't have enough power to keep the cpu cooled. Remembe its for cooling food and drink, i doubt much food or drink that goes into a fridge hits 70 degrees or so.

Himmler 03-05-2003 09:21 PM

dude i dont think that is possible lol, its a hella funny idea. but yeah u would get condensation cuz there is always water n' shit in my fridge. I wouldnt risk it even tho most parts of a comp are supposed to be water proof. u know u can dump a monitor in alcohol and it wont do shit to it? =). the most i would do is that liquid cool thing but i dunno even bout that. maybe you should try and get a hose like u said and find some way to direct the air all the way to the CPU or just direct it into the case for some cold air. i think that might be something worth trying that would be a lot more safe then putting your motherboard into a refridgerator =|. well with whatever u do good luck man. o yeah do u think you could please change my name to Himmler cuz i dont like TheReich anymore plz if you could plz do it real fast sometime soon...thanks. =)

Simo Häyhä 03-05-2003 09:29 PM

try it out on a shitty and old computer...i would love to see this biggrin:

Tripper 03-05-2003 09:33 PM

Dude - If you do this, you gotta post pics! biggrin:

Bazooka_Joe 03-05-2003 11:14 PM

I might do it on an old PC to see how it holds out, but not this one! heh

I think your right about the condensation though, I just dont get how the vapochill works properly then. hake:

Muff Diver 03-05-2003 11:17 PM

use ziplock baggies for the pieces

Himmler 03-05-2003 11:42 PM

03-05-2003 11:43 PM

joe is merely a puny mod, he can do nothing more than lock, delete and threaten people.

Arkan 03-06-2003 12:37 AM

er, ok.......that "Katie" is one hot chick you got there!

Anyway, back to the topic, i saw an article in "Maximum PC" about using liquid to cool PC's and a guy did convert his small fridge to do just that. I don't remember which mag# it was in but check out their site. Heck, just order the mag...one of the best !!

Himmler 03-06-2003 12:43 AM

uh nah that isnt her..if ur too stupid to realize http://130.89.160.183/jig/fora/ is where i got that and no it isnt katie so stfu b4 i come over there and kick your sorry ass n00b

Old Reliable 03-06-2003 12:56 AM

like I said go over to the http://www.motherboards.org forums, they know everything

and yes both him and his dad use "katie"

Himmler 03-06-2003 12:43 PM

At least this puny mod can pwn j00 on these forums, oOo: .

Slaggg 03-07-2003 12:21 PM

It's very possible to do. A couple things you can do is 'de-insulate' the fridge case, and install a small 'de-humidifier'.

snipeymagoo 03-09-2003 02:18 AM
