oh raelly... 2.5 to three hours north of Des moines is near lake okoboji right? do you live near okoboji or spirit lake???

Graverobber 01-07-2002 07:07 AM

My mom's from Des Moines too, I go there every summer to see my grand parents, Des Moines a nice city and all but there is NOTHING to do there.

Ricochet 01-07-2002 07:11 AM

bout ohhh an hour 20 mins or so east of okaboji and spiritlake....my family has a membership with Cuttys http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

If any of you do one thing this year, see Episode II, if you do two things this year, go to Okaboji, IA for July 4th.

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 07:15 AM

LOL!!!! okoboji is sooooo crowded on 4th of july its not even funny. Im pretty sure by my estimates that more than 75% of Iowa goes to okoboji for fourth of july.

Graverobber 01-07-2002 07:19 AM

Excuse my ignorance about Okoboji, but why is it so crowded around the fourth. I realize that there has to be celebraions but what makes this town so special?

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 07:37 AM

well, to be honest theres one main reason. Iowa is one of the best states in the country, but it can be kinda boring. going to lakes during the summer is the only way to escape the heat and boredom of summer

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 07:38 AM

you live in minnesota and you haven't experienced the pure joy of visiting Okoboji??

this is random, but do any of you know how to change your profile on this site???

Graverobber 01-07-2002 07:43 AM

there is a small profile hyperlink under the post new topic/post reply buttons at the top, if this isn't what you mean then I don't know.

I can honestly say I've never been to Okoboji, And since I bike RAGBRAI I should know like all the town in Iowa. I have heard of it though, maybe I'll visit.

Arclight 01-07-2002 07:54 AM

Do a search and use U.S. Army Signal Corps or add photos to it.

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 08:15 AM

is ragbrai or whatever that bike ride across iowa???
im origionally from chicago, illinois, but i live in Los Angeles now. my dad was born near chicago, but grew up in minneapolis. he went to edina high school (not sure on spelling) if you know of it

Graverobber 01-07-2002 08:23 AM

Yeah Ragbrai is a big ride accross Iowa, the riders are usually routed through small towns, to get a taste of Iowa, and also for shameless advertising and the hawking of cheap (but pretty!) goods.

And yes I know of Edina, I used to live in St. Paul, and I have some friends that live in Blommington.

Ricochet 01-07-2002 09:14 AM

I can't say for sure why Okoboji is so crowded during the 4th, but hey, it is, so I go hehehe. I've done RAGBRI my self 3 times I think, not the whole week at once mind you, but a day or two at once hehe.

My schedule prevents me from doing the whole week, although I hope to this year http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

*EDIT*
Hey, perhaps a few of us could get a team MoHAA going for RAGBRI, that is if 2015 would let us use the name*hint hint*

Yeah me too I do a few days (3-4) then I wander around the towns, my friends and I get a RV, and go from city to city, so we can set up stuff for the people that ride that day.

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 09:21 AM

Ya,my cousins live in des moines, and all of her friend's do RAGBAI. iT sounds cool, but im way too lazy to ride bikes. id rather just ride in a car around iowa. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif

Im really jeleous of you guys. i wish all the time that I still lived in chicago, or anywhere in the midwest. The midwest is by far, in my oppinion, the best part of the U.S. I strongly urge anyone from outside of the country to, when they come to visit, visit at least chicago or some other city in the midwest. id much rather live in the midwest compared to Los Angeles.

Ricochet 01-07-2002 09:23 AM

Its really cool how the lil towns really get into it. All the food stands, beer gardens(took to partipate in them myself), and other stuff. I remeber about 3 years ago when it came through my town, for an over-night stop, we had a laser show, a party uptown till about 3 in the morning, buses everywhere, tents, tents and more tents.
And the people, man, the people that do RAGBRI are really cool beans, nicest people I've ever met.

I've had some of the funnest times of my life on that crazy trip. The little towns do get into it, and they are all very considerate, and especially helpful. After you've been riding for a day, you're tired hungry, thirsty, and in need of a shower, and people gladly donate their homes for an evening, share their food, their lawn, and their bathroom.

I agree, with Ihavenofriends, I've been all over the U.S. and although I love the people all over the country, some of the most kind and helpful live in the midwest.

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 09:43 AM

ya, your guys examples of the small towns definately prove my point that all over the world it is hard to find people that match the quality and niceness(not sure if that is a word) of midwesterners.

its hard to live life when in the winter it is 0 degrees or below, and when in the summer the degrees is at least 85 and theres massive amounts of humidity, yet the people are still nice.

Ricochet 01-07-2002 09:47 AM

You come talk to me at 7am when I have to get up for school and start my car when its 0 or below and my windows are all good and frosted(yes, they made the defroster for a reason http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif)and see how nice I am http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My god I know what you mean, I shamble out to my car every morning at 4 degrees above, scrape the layer of ice off the windows, and freeze in my car on the 15 min. drive to school.

I could go for some of that L.A. sunshine anyday.

ya, i remember when i lived in chicago and woke up at 2:30 in the morning to go to hockey when it had been snowing all night.

just so you guys know its 60 degrees all winter and 75-80 all summer. (i apologize, i just had to rub the weather thing in a bit. dont take it badly though, im a fellow midwesterner)

Graverobber 01-07-2002 10:02 AM

/me bangs head against monitor in disgust

Ricochet 01-07-2002 10:03 AM

If it is gonna snowe all night, my boss calls me up and says "be ready to shovel in the morning." Now, this isn't some 8am jobby, oh no, 3am, the wind is blowing, the snow is flying, and my boss, in an Expadition, is flying down the road at 50. I fear for my life every time I go help shovel, but I get time and a half pay, so it isn't all that bad.

*EDIT*
Don't make me hurt you Ihavenofriends. I'll, I'll, I'll throw a snowball at you! With Ice in the middle! http://www.freakygamers.com/smilies/.../FIREdevil.gif

IHaveNOFriendsAndISuck 01-07-2002 10:06 AM

i was just thinking to myself: WHAT DOES ROAD SALT TASTE LIKE??? if you ate it would you die?? it can rust cars so im guessing it could do some nasty stuff to yuor stomach...

Graverobber 01-07-2002 10:07 AM

Thankfully I am gainfully unemployed at the moment so I don't have to experience the sheer terror that has obviously scarred ricochet for life.

Graverobber 01-07-2002 10:08 AM

Doesn't road salt irritate your hands if you hold on to enough of it. And why would you think about that in the first place??

lol

Ricochet 01-07-2002 10:10 AM

I can tell you this much, 50lb bags of Road Salt, are heavy. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
