Kerrang on METALLICA's 'St. Anger'

---------------------------------------------------------
METALLICA's forthcoming effort, "St. Anger", is nothing short of "the finest thing [the band] have put their name to," according to the latest issue of Britain's Kerrang! magazine, which recently had an opportunity to preview a couple of the cuts set to appear on the CD.

"The volume is intoxicating, the songs even more so," the report continues. "METALLICA haven't gone backwards, they have gone elsewhere, somewhere they haven't really gone before. Much of the speed is back — speed that recalls the days of 'Battery' and 'Dyers Eve'. But the format is remarkedly different. This isn't controlled aggression, much of it is uncontrolled violence. It's ironic that at a time when the band are so at peace with one another they should make an album that sounds like they're at war. As one track follows the another — there are only working titles like 'Monster' and 'Frantic' — the difference not only between what you expect but what has gone becomes clear. There's no space between the drums and the guitars, there are riffs everywhere, there is anger and confusion — 'Do not know the answer, I don't know what the question is' is one lyric - there is swearing and shouting and time changes and speed and fury.

It is difficult on a first listen not to surmise that 'St. Anger' is the finest thing METALLICA have put their name to. All the songs I'm assured, sound like this. There are no ballads. Instead there's an assault of speed and volume and anger and intensity. This is exactly the kind of thing that made a slogan such as 'Birth, school, METALLICA, death' an apposite and appropriate summation of everything this band could muster, both in themselves and their audience." Well THAT sounds promising, doesn't it, 'tallica fans?!?! w00tahhh!!

ill believe it when i hear it oOo: bold statements coming from this zine. first 4 albums were metallica...the rest were pure garbage....it all changed for the worse when Burton died IMO....id like them to prove me wrong though....

Zoner 03-27-2003 03:14 PM

Agreed.

But, I certainly don't blame Newsted for Metallica's change in style. Newsted rocked harder than the other three guys in the band, in my opinion.

I'll definitely try this one before I buy. If it's as heavy as kerrang make it out to be, I'll pick it up for sure.

Jason + VoiVod=pwned.....I hope that comes to light. He wrote a ton of music for one of their records (Phobos I trhink?)...Saw VoiVod a long time ago at Hammerjacks in Bmore.....man im old....

Zoner 03-27-2003 03:19 PM

I'm seeing Voivod here in Ottawa in June! They're opening for Ozzy! I saw 'em open for Maiden in '99 too...very good set.

I can't wait to see Newsted live...too cool.

Hopefully that it wont be really fast crap with tons of swearing because thats equally not as metallica as Garage-Reload. Ron Trujillo looks like hell fill the spot nicely and hopefully well get a great album.

Alright this is encouraging, but I'll believe it when I hear it.

D00d, that says it all right there. I take reviews for crap, so you'll have to excuse me if I refuse to believe this magazine article. If they produce some good shit like back in the day, it will be a new era for their music again, man. All I gotta say is i'm seeing them on my birthday, my 21st BIRTHDAY!, and they better not skip town!!!!!

03-27-2003 08:22 PM

I hope they kick some ass, after the black cd they went down hill. Plus now they have a way better bass player, from suicidal tendencies. they are probably sick of every one calling them sell outs. I remember in the day they said they would never make a video. And they didn't mind posers as long as they stayed in the back. But that was with the great late Cliff.

Any news on a realse date?

03-27-2003 09:51 PM

I just down loaded the hunger demo its not to bad. better than any thing off of the loads cds.

Zoner 03-28-2003 10:48 AM

wow garage inc is a great cd. the loads sucked. and if you like ride the lighting you should be a megadeth fan. sinse that was a dave mustaine album all the way. i find it funny how bad metallica riped him off.

Captain Bunny 03-28-2003 01:55 PM

Kerrang have really really gone downhill in recent years.
Not that i doubt metallicas new album will be worth buying, but i wouldnt get your hopes up by a review from a lets face it - shitty magazine.

Megadeth/Metallica
Hunger

A quick test to see how the Napster filtering system is working resulted in this Metallica gem which floated straight to the top. It's an unreleased collaboration with fellow metal all stars Megadeth nonetheless. Metallica lore states Megadeth's Dave Mustaine was exiled from the band not on good terms, which makes this even more bizarre. While the recording does sound like both groups it is in fact a fake. I found out on the Megadeth website that its really performed by some bumblefuck metal band out Atlanta or Phoenix. Excellent prank though not as good as my Russian folk song disguised under the name Babyface Master Puppets Remix.

there is the clip...my guitarist and long time friend alex...has listened to Megadeth his whole life...that kid knows everything about that band...(kinda scary)...he told me the story...still dont believe me? hake:

5th Track Down

GUARNERE = OWNED BY HIMSELF cry:

03-28-2003 04:11 PM

theres more than one song there. and there web site names that song as being on the new album. but some of sounds to good to be matallica any way. to modern, blah blah so dont try and turn this in to just a one song flame. maybe hunger is fake. but all the songs listed on album r there. some onlt 1mn long. demoms fuck up and such. i had demos of master of pupets before it was out, and know one played bass like cliff back then. so there real. as new songs i listened to them all only 3 sound like james.

Yes yes, Megadeth was the heart of Metallica. Well, where's Megadeth today? In the shadows my friend. evil:

Don't get me wrong, Megadeth is my 3rd favorite band, it's just that Metallica is no longer a part of Dave, Metallica is Metallica.
