Well my Great Grandpa (or Opa) was in WWII... forced to join the Germans at 14 or 16 and fight in Stalingrad.. he is MIA which I still belive he is (nalining some russian chicks making fun of there way, etc) We have letters and pictures just my father won't show them to me.

My grandpa was a flight engineer on a B-29 over Japan, and my great uncle was a tailgunner in a B-17, he qualified for pilot, but they wouldn't let him due to his color blindness, which doesn't make sense, then why would they let him gun, unless he had a certain color blindness, different colors. Well, the B-17 got shot down, over Germany, I believe, not sure, the crew wasn't found till sometime after the war ended.

move to america and get that shit back, my grandpa was too young to serve i think, also since he lived in bosnia i dont think we put up much resistance to adolf, so he spent alot of time running from those bastards and almost getting killed once

My Dad served on a hospital ship. My Dad's brother was in the engineering corp. He came in at D-day plus two. (I made the mistake as a kid of suggesting that building bridges must have been alot safer than being a foot soldier - he sat me down and told me stories of what it's like to build a pontoon bridge while guys are shooting at you and your buddies are dying). My Dad's sister's husband fought on Iwo Jima. He has never talked about it. My Aunt always said it was too painful for him to discuss it.
My grandfather served in the US Navy and was stationed in the Carribean Sea near the end of the war. He had to lie about his age to sign up. biggrin:
he tried but he had to give it up. hes got an browning auto 5 12 gauge, first shotgun to use a spring loaded pump made in around 1943 or so, only made a few 100. awesome gun
Dunno, my grand-family is all dead. I would guess Italy.
My Maternal Grandfather was a Marine Gunnery-Sergeant, (Artillery). Served in the PTO. Sadly, he passed away during my first week of Jump School. I had never been able to get him to tell me any of his stories. He would always shake his head and say, "Maybe later.".
I can remember my CO calling me into his office to give me the bad news. He was forthright and compassionate, but professional. At the time, I thought he was being an asshole. He told me I could have 3 days Leave to go home for the funeral. But if I did so, I'd have to drop out of Jump School, and not be able to re-attend. I chose to remain in my Class. I felt at the time, that it was what my G-Pa would've wanted for me. I still feel I made the right choice, although I do miss him dearly, and at times regret not being there with and for the rest of my family. My Paternal Grandfather was a '4F'. During his younger years in Philly, he got himself into trouble, the kind that ends up with a severe beating from pipes and ax handles. His bones never healed properly. |
I don't know, one was from Italy another one from Portugal.
Grandparents starting to move out of Poland. Grandpa born the year of the blitzkrieg. Spent a few years of his young life in a concentration camp and stuff. Immagrated to the us in 52 or something
My uncle served in Korea...I think that's the only real connection the family had to any war.
Two Great Grandpas in the Wehrmacht, and both got captured....one in Africa, and the other in Russian, and both survived...

My Dad's dad, was a Marine Pilot in the PTO. He flew a Helldiver and was shot down twice. Both times rescued in a little rubber raft in the Pacific and sent back to battle.
My Mom's dad was in the Army, but was shot in the knee during his training and was not sent over to Europe. Most of my Great Uncles were in the war as well serving as pilots in the PTO. |
my grandad of my dads side was a forrestry comisioner, and so was too important to be made to sign up.
my grandad of my mums side was a joiner, and he built war ships. my great uncle on my dads side is the only relative ive been told of who saw combat. tail gunner in a stirling bomber. was shot down twice. first time the tail end was shot off and it landed in a tree with my great uncle stll inside. second time he and the crew were ordered to bail out over the english channel of their badly shot up plane, the pilot had a face full of flak, and the co-pilot was badly injured but they kept the plane flying long enough to reach the channel, before it crashed. pilot and co pilot died but saved the crew. the pilot was awarded the posthumous Victoria Cross. (medal of honor in american terms) i only found all this out after my great ncle died a few years ago, but i wish i had known when he was alive, though my dad said he didnt like to talk about his experiences. |
my grandpa on my dad's side was killed during the battle of the bulge from tank shrapnel, my grandpa on my mother's side was a bridge builder during the Battle of Guadlcanal. He died shortly after I was born cry: A bunch of my other family members were in wars, like my father. He was in the 1st Calvary divison and was an artillery guy. He made it up to Captain before the war ended. He once had a grenade go off right by his ear, he still cant hear that well out of it today. He has a lot of medals he got over in Vietnam, i might show them to you
Grandfather on dad's side: Engineer and top turret gunner on a b-17 bomber that completed it's 25 missions in France and returned home. He died from inhaling the fumes from a fluid they used to clean the engines out.
Step grandfather: b-17 also. I think he was either a ball turret gunner or a waist gunner, I'm not sure. He was in Italy. Still alive. Interesting story with my grandfather, he took his vest off of himself and incidentally it landed on his foot, later a piece of flak ripped through the flooring and imbedded itself in the flak vest. If the vest hadn't been there he probably would have to have it amputated, for he said the piece of flak was very large. |
Oh, and my Grandfather was a tech-sergeant and my step Grandfather was a buck sergeant.
