What is an "American"?
A buddy sent me this today and i decided to share it here with the MOH crowd.
[[You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was a report that a Pakistani newspaper had published an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American - any American. So, an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is so they would know who to kill when they found one. "An American is English, or French, or Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian, Asian or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, or one of the many other tribes known as Native Americans. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there is more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or amed thugs claming to speak for the government and for God. An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each man and woman to the pursuit of happiness. An American is generous. Americans have helped out just sbout every other nation in the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, the Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, culture, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists. So, you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world But, in doing so, you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American."]] I asked him to post me the link to the story and i'll post it here when he does. Anyway, pretty interesting and yet disturbing at the same time. |
seems correct
They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom though I can't believe this statement... |

Oh, yeah I'm American, also, what time in England is really nice weather wise, I hear all the time that England is just rainy, I don't think it's rainy constantly, but during an American summer, would it be a good choice to go spend time in England?

Not a bad post...
An american is ignorant enough to class britian as england. what happened to rep of ireland, ireland, scotland and wales? hake:[/quote:93f54] That's not just Americans, unfortunately. :( However, are English people technically British? If I recall correctly, the word "Briton" comes from the CELTIC dialect "Brythonic", and the word "England" is derrived from "Angle-land"; the land of the Angles, Germanic Barbarians. So therefore, would English people even technically be British? |
Captain Bunny - have never gotten a firm grasp on that. Could you clarify the terms for us. All of those countries(??) are part of the United Kindom? Which is the same as England? I really dunno. Help us out?
|
I AM AMERICAN. But sometimes im not. biggrin:

Alot of people here fucking sicken me, dont like the thread, dont post, i dont understand it. hake:

Ok, well without being picky as to what exactly a briton is, even though the origins of their names bears no significance, as that would be like saying are todays americans really american - because they all came from other countries other than the natives.
As it stands today, Great Britain consists of Scotland england northern ireland and wales. Collectively we are all British. thats what we have on our passports, we arnt allowed to put scottish, welsh, irish or english. The republic of ireland is not part of britain - i dont know a great deal on the history of that, gerard is the man to ask here, as i would probably get something wrong. Back in the olden days when "Britain" invaded america, the British were on a vast majority, English soldiers. Who conquered a lot of contries in the world to expand the empire. The British Empire, or United Kingdom. Which used to consist of Canada, india, most of south africa, australia, Falkland Islands, and a couple of little islands scattered arounf the pacific. These days, like all empires eventuality, the United Kingdom (uk) is not much of a kingdom anymore. You might remember Hong Kong recently being returned to china a few year ago, big celebration with the queen or some shit like that. London is the capital of England and Great Britian, england is not the capital of britian as ive heard from some people. Probably the most pathetic one ive heard was someone who thought scotland was a county (thats county not country) in england. Whats worse is she said it on national TV on Blind Date. There was artical in the papers the other day from an american about troops in iraq, saying it wasnt right to call the US troops yanks, as it was as bad as them calling the british forces the english. Its ignorant and insulting to both. so please all, have a bit of respect, thats all i ask freak: |
An american is ignorant enough to class britian as england. what happened to rep of ireland, ireland, scotland and wales?
hake:[/quote:b6c80] The Republic of Ireland, or Eire, has nothing to do with Great Britain. |
Oh, and on topic... American is a hot-pot of racial mix, although so is a lot of countries these days.
I don't see anything wrong with that post at all Arkan, one of your better ones. Pity you didn't actually write it, though biggrin: |

read my other post numpty. |
I did, but I stll said it because I wondered why you put it in there in the first place.
To elaborate, it seems to me that you're right about each nation of the UK seeming to rather be called by their nationality than being called British, but the way I get it is most Scottish and Welsh people feel this way, moreso than the English. That's another can of stereotypical worms, though. |
