We Were Soldiers (2002)

After playing and completing vietcong I fancy watching a vietname movie but I have never seen one before and so I was thinking of renting out we were soldiers but before I do that I just wondered what you guys think of the film?

Innoxx 04-28-2003 04:26 PM

Too gung-ho, if you want that "shitstorm" feeling that was truely Vietnam I'd recommend Platoon, Hamburger Hill or Full Metal Jacket.

Concurness.

Sergeant_Scrotum 04-28-2003 04:51 PM

I liked it

pretty good movie, though my dad (who was in Vietnam in the 1st Air Cav) said that the terrain looks nothing like Vietnam. Ive seen pics from him and it doesnt look anything like it. Also a odd thing i noticed in the movie was that the battle was going on at the same time as when they cut back to the telegrams. They sent them out pretty quickly didnt they?

04-28-2003 05:10 PM

I hated it. To me, it seemed like the entire movie relied on gore, it really had nothing else to offer. IMO, it's a complete peice of shit movie, I also recommend Platoon

Zap. USMC 04-28-2003 05:12 PM

Well, of course, war does NOT have gore. As a matter of fact, war is VERY pretty and I'm ashamed "We Were Soldiers" showed that, war is nothing like that hake:

mrangry 04-28-2003 05:16 PM

full metal jacket for sure

It's a shitty movie. It's the typical "American rambos vs faceless masses of enemies" movie. I'd rather watch Windtalkers. Good shoot 'em up flicks, but not much else.

If you want to know what Vietnam looked like, then Full Metal Jacket or Platoon. But if you want to get into the head of some of the people there and feel what it was like, then go see Apocolypse Now.

I thought We Were Soldiers was ok but I would have liked to have seen more of the training involved with putting the 1st Air Cav into action. As the unit name implies, they were the 1st unit to be integrated with full helicopter support and they invented a lot of the tactics that were used later in the war.

I was being sarcastic in that post above, Innoxx. Just trying to make a point about how war was actually quite gory and disturbing.

However, if you didn't know this was based on a true story, and pretty soon I'll be reading the book myself. I do agree that some parts of the movie were quite unrealistic (like the part about Chris Klein doing that rambo shit, etc) But overall, it showed what really happened that day.

I can just ask my dad, he was there, he KNOWS what it looks like. You just never forget what sopmething looks like when bullets are flying at you

Ferich 04-28-2003 05:54 PM

Yes I'm sure he painted a picture of the landscapre while AK rounds were going for his head................. Anyways, Hamburger Hill is badass.

Zap. USMC 04-28-2003 05:56 PM

You also have to remember, "Sclass12" that two soldiers could be in the same trench, not more then 15 yards apart and have different views on that certain battle and current state of the surroundings, etc.

It's THAT different, so that I've been told. However, I've never been in a combat situation, but I've had expierance in airsoft and paintball "battles" and after the skirmish me and my friends would have a totally different outlook on what happened.

04-28-2003 06:08 PM

my dad had to remember. he was a soldier. He had to remember where everything was or he could not operate the way a soldier is supposed to operate

Milla 04-28-2003 06:21 PM

Ok "We were soldiers" is a great movie, i definatly recommend it.

04-28-2003 06:28 PM

and what i ment by how my dad said it didnt look like Vietnam is that the scenary looks like it was shot in a forest in NA, not in Vietnam. I mean, in Vietnam, it was dense with tress, plants, and that long grass

Innoxx 04-28-2003 06:41 PM

Yeah, Apoc Now was a good film. I think WWS was just too squeaky clean for Vietnam.

Heh somebody used my pic. Anyway I think We Were Soldiers is an excellent movie. And it was filmed in Fort Benning, GA, and North Carolina. Other than that things are pretty accurate, and whoever said the movie only relies on gore, I think not. The first hour or so deals with Gibson's thoughts and family and preparing for war.

Pyro 04-28-2003 07:36 PM

FMJ is the best one imho.

" Hey...when we film this Movie, let's do it exactly where it was Filmed, and I'm sure the Vietnamese Government won't care."

Dude, it's a movie. It looked like Vietnam to me. Vietnam has a melting pot of Terrain...........Again, watch Hamburger Hill. I think they have a Level in Vietcong just like it.

Ferich 04-28-2003 08:00 PM

Second Filmed = Take place...... Drugs are Bad.

Milla 04-28-2003 08:04 PM

Ummm...Sclass it was a fucking field clearing, and around the field was guess what OMFG!!! THICK BRUSH AND OMG TALL GRASS!!, even in the field the grass was decent size.

Cpt. Obvious 04-28-2003 08:29 PM

Forest Gump was a good vietnam movie.

Innoxx 04-28-2003 08:55 PM

[quote="Cpt. Obvious":ce87c]Forest Gump was a good vietnam movie.[/quote:ce87c]

Yeah, the Vietnam part in FG was good.

Innoxx 04-28-2003 08:57 PM

PS: Most Vietnam war movies are filmed in The Phillipines, with the exception of Apocalypse Now which was actually filmed in Southern Vietnam. I think WWS was filmed in South Carolina or something like that.

Yes you are right, Vietnam has triple, double, and single canopy terrain, all which harvest different plant species and geographical features.

04-28-2003 09:36 PM

my dad said it looked NOTHING like Vietnam

WE KNOW ALREADY. anyways, I loved the Sergeant Major in the film. lmao.

"If any of you call me grandpa, I'll fuckin kill you!"
or
"Good Morning sir."
"What the fuck makes it a god damn good morning." -errr somethin' like that. biggrin:

04-28-2003 09:58 PM

did you see the deleted scenes on the DVD. Apparently the old guy was scared that way (from what i remembered, correct me if im wrong) that he was a drill instructor or something, and he ordered all his men out of barracks with all their medals they have evr won. One guy comes out with no medals on. Old guy (then young) yells at him to go back and get them on. That guy comes back naked, with 2 Congressional Medal of Honors around his neck. And that's what made him all grumpy

04-29-2003 03:30 AM

Platoon is so far the best vietnam war movie. I highly recommend getting that, you can get WWS but you must get Platoon.

pest 04-29-2003 07:55 AM

We were soldiers was accurate for the part of the war that it portrayed. It looked like it could have been filmed near where I live but with hills (which is basically where it was filmed, duh). But being a film, I understand that they have to take those liberties often.

Other than that, the movie is average at best. It started good, but the actual in country footage is only so-so.

And Apocalypse Now was filmed in the phillipines, not vietnam.

Zoner 04-29-2003 07:58 AM

We Were Soldiers wasn't that bad. Ok, it wasn't the most realistic...so what? It had some large battles and lotsa gore. It's a good popcorn movie. Not everyone HAS to be a military purist, do they?

Just watch it and have some fun.
