Thoughts on GeForce FX
Lookin to upgrade from my GeForce2 64mb to FX
Anybody running w/ the FX ? Any problems or issues w/ this one or go w/ ATI 9700 128mb |
unless you want a noisy bitch that takes up 2 pci slots go for the FX
i would go for the 9700 pro, it way even be cheaper |
Yeah, the fan takes up another PCI slot. I don't have either, but from what I've read the latest ATI's are better.
|
Definately dont want noise and using a PCI slot aint gonna work either
Looks like Radeon |
I was considering getting a GF FX, as my GF4 died, but I decided to get the RADEON 9800 Pro. The only good factor I can see for the FX is that is has the built-in fan duct to allow the warm air to escape via a PCI case slot.
|
yeah but just think about how much dust is ging to be collected in that thing, after a few months it will be hell to clean i bet ya
|
also i heard that the fx is alergic to screensavers. I heard that when your screensaver( some) pops up the fx shuts down the fan in like 4 mins or so causing the video cards temp to rise very rapidly but nvidia is aware of that problem now so.....
|
Go with the 9700 pro. Unless you want to wait for the 256mb DDRII later this year. Overall the 9700 pro is the best out now though for the money. You can get one for 300 $ @ newegg.com
just look for saphire atlantis 9700 pro. they are good. Stay away from the powercolor brand named cards they are shit. |
Dont run any 3D screen savers or else it will fry.
GG nVidia having the fan controlled by the system drivers. |
NVIDIA = SHITE
ATI OWNZ NVIDIA END OF STORY. |
NVIDIA is better

Explanation about why FXs suck so much:
nVidia, in their infinite wisdom, decided to have a different way of controlling the fan. The fan speed would depend on how much stress is being put on the video card by how many programs are running. It seems like a good idea at first...if you dont want to idle. Here is what makes their idea sooooo bad. When your computer is running no programs at all for a certain length of time, nVidia made it so that the fan will actually shut off, sounds bad already eh? And when a program is executed, it starts back up again and it's all fine and dandy. So...lets say that you went idle for 10+ minutes and your Matrix Reloaded Screensaver pops up. Now you're not running any programs since your idle, but your screensaver demands a large amount of 3D effects from your video card. So the card tries and gives it the graphics it needs to continue along. Now all this work the card is doing requires a large amount of cooling, after all, it IS the might GEFORCE FX 5800 ULTRA! *scary music plays* But since your computer isnt running any programs, it doesnt start the fan (gg fan controlled by drivers). So after about 4 or 5 seconds into this screensaver, your card is reaching a good 95 - 100 degrees celcius, give or take a few. Now a NORMAL operating temperature for anything is around...30 - 40 degrees celcius, about that, I run at 35 and it's no big deal. But if you ever ran at 95 - 100 degrees celcius for more then say....10 seconds, your CPU would melt right into your motherboard. Same thing is going to happen with the "godly" GeForce FX. $400 bucks down the drain! WOOHOO! And that's why the FX blows. |
By the way, the card can freeze with any 3D screensaver, even 3D pipes that comes with windows. It will just take a bit longer, but it will do the job nonetheless.
biggrin: |
ATI kicks ass. in fact, I have the Radeon 8500 and it is the best investment i've ever made
|
Damn, I guess I opened up can of shitworms on this topic.
Probably wait for thhe 256MB card later this year. Thanx |

"hey falco, youre not even a has been, youre a never was!!!!!"
i think if i bought a card id go with the 9800 256MB ddr, i just hope it isnt over 400 |
The GeForce FX is cheap here. In the ads this morning, the 5800 was $199, and the 5200 was $150, and both had rebates down to about $100. I still wouldn't go with it, my Gf4 is fine for now.

Seriously, what brand is the card their advertising? |
There's 3 of them. I must have misread the 5800, because it's all 5200.
At Circuit City, they have PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 128MB Ultra AGP $159.99 At Best Buy, they have Asylum GeForce FX 5200 Ultra 128MB for $179.99 and the $99.99 is the 5200 PCI. I don't know if that's what they usually run for or not, but I was waking up and must have misread the 5800. |
