I told my grandfather about this game-he wanted to play it-so i let him here are some things he had to say.
-first off he said that the ranger uniform was innacurate du to the fact that that the gear was not buttoned together. secondly he said thae airborne units look good. He said the infantry units are inaccurate in multiplayer.
-he said the garand is very well doen as well as the thompson. he said the BAR could use some help-and he was surpriesed to see a shotgun
-he said that the sounds were more than excellent. He also noted the there were excellent building models
-then i showed him the video of omaha beach-he said it would be more accurate if people were throwing up on the ship
-overall he said it was "very well done"
---my grandpa was with the rangers on omaha beach. he was wounded, and won a disquished service cross because he rescued seven men stuck in a crater. His brother was with the 101st airborn in operationmarket garden (battle of the buldge) so hes has a pretty good idea of what that was like too

That's really cool that someone of "The Greatest Generation" is finally asked his/her opinion of how accurate video game interpetations of the second world war are.

My grandfather never served in World War 2, so I'm not as lucky as you are, man. Be proud, your granddad is a hero.

Tell your Grandfather, Thanks, for fighting for our freedom in WWII.

He must be a very brave man.

It's good to know that he is not offended by the game, that he thinks it is "well done".

I was wondering what veterans would think about this game...

Hellbaby2065 01-13-2002 01:28 AM

Yeah, he is definitely a hero. Any man that landed on Omaha beach is a hero in my book.

he says that the real heroes are the men he couldnt save, Hes als really cool about telling me his experiences in ww2

Mange 01-13-2002 01:31 AM

Agreed...be sure to tell him several of the people on the forum you visit are thankful for his service. My grandfather, God rest his soul, was always proud of the service he did in WW2. He served in the Army in the Pacific. He was heading for the mainland invasion of Japan when they dropped the bomb. I can say I am thankful he didn't have to go through that invasion because I might have never known him. I can't understand some of the mentality of some of the people here that are appalled we dropped it. I know alot of our men would have not come home if it hadn't been done.

Wehrmacht is just a general term for the German armed forces.

Yeah my Grandpa served in WWII as an infantry unit (not sure what group). He was on the frontline of the Rhine River. He idn't talk much about it because of some of the things he saw. Some things he did say was he saw his best bud get ripped apart by a machine gun (who survived thankfully) and also how he got a bronze star for noticing a grenade without the pin in it. He threw it just before it exploded. He also got shrapnel in he face from stepping on a mine, which he got the purple hart for. His group was the group getting ready to enter Berlin when the war ended. BTW, if anyone knows any movies about that infantry group please tell me. He took place in the major Rhine River battle and also about being the frontline to enter Berlin. I'm interested to see if he may be represented in any movies. BTW: His name was Herl "Bud" Barlow.

My dad who served in Vietnam (and got the Purple Heart) knows pretty much nothing about video games, and if I showed him AA he would think it was pretty cool. He already thinks it's a cool game, and I don't think he's seen any of the game at all, except for the pics on our Wallpaper.

But anyway, my dad got wounded 3 days after his 19th birthday, bulldozing trees in the jungle, and sprung a booby trap. He also got the Sharpshooter's Award (or something like that) in basic training (I think).

Bean 01-13-2002 03:32 AM

my grandfather was in the navy. he was on a destroyer but i forgot the name of it. he served both in the pacific and european campains. he told me this story where this japanese patrol boat was planting bombs or throwing grenades or something inside of an american vessel so he took his rifle and shot him. after he shot him a freakin battle started. i swear my grandfather started a battle. i love u grandpa. also i think ur grandfather should have received a medal of honor for saving seven guys on d-day. Im not sure the exact requirements but i think its where u put urself in extreme danger and have no regard for ur life to save others.

My grandpa was a POW in Germany for months, living off of bread and water. He only told me that he escaped from the camp later in the war, thats all he ever wanted to tell me.

NOLF 01-13-2002 03:59 AM

People just don't like to talk about war experiences...not the case w/ my dad though.

operationmarket garden (battle of the buldge)

No, those are completely different. operation Market Garden was the massive airborne drop and failed horribly, due in large part to the idiocy of the plan, and horrid action by British Tanks.

The Battle of the Bulge was when the majority of the Allied Army was held up and the Western end of the outskirts of germany. the Nazis made a desperate final push to break the advance apart, but ultimetly failed.

Manny 01-13-2002 05:05 AM

My grandpa got sent back after he wounded more than 5 of his own soilders with a grenade that went off before it was suppost to. That's why I'll never join the Army. That foolishness is in my blood.

sgt.sayian 01-13-2002 06:07 AM

My grandpa was in the canadian army, he got his stomache guts shot out possibly by a mp40 or mp42, he was in belguim fighting, he never really talked about it but he said "he saw a german sniper, we both made eye contact and im standing here now" so he killed him.
I couldn't imagine how the fuck guys survived throught the war, it would be pretty freak throwing grenades back an forth or running across a street while getting shot at by tanks or infantry.

If you saw Band of Brothers, the Battle of the Bulge is referenced in episode 6 "Bastogne". The 506th was surrounded, freezing to death, heavily outnumbered, low on ammo, medicine, food, etc. Patton takes credit for saving their ass but you wil never here anyone from the 506th say they needed saving! http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif

Everyone who fought in WWII were real heroes.
Imagine being ordered to advance under heav fire. I aint have the guts to do that shit.

Oddball 01-14-2002 10:34 AM

Cool, it means EA and 2015 have pretty much hit the nail on the head.
I had a Great Grandad in the First World War. He served in Gallipoli, got bayoneted in the knee and also served on the Western Front. He was in the AIF(Australian Imperial Forces).

I also had two Uncles in WWII who served in New Guinea but unfortunately while their platoon was going through a swamp, one was shot right in front of him and they couldn't stop to help him because they had to get out of there.

General MacArthur had started to send Australian soldiers on missions that had no military importance and my uncle was shot on one of these missions. Which is WHY I FUCKING HAD GENERAL MACARTHUR! I FUCKING HATE THE CUNT! IF IT WASN'T FOR HIM I WOULD HAVE AN UNCLE!
