China warns SARS spreaders could face execution

BEIJING - China is threatening to execute or impose a life sentence on anyone who breaks quarantine orders and deliberately spreads SARS.

The Supreme Court laid out the punishments in an attempt to prevent SARS from spreading through the countryside, home to many of the country's 1.3 billion people.
The court cited existing laws that include a possible death sentence even for nonviolent offences, although it isn't often imposed.

Some human rights activists say the measure is too extreme.

The illness has killed 271 people in China, including four new deaths on Thursday. Officials in Hong Kong are reporting seven new deaths from SARS.

dang, thats messed up right there man. What if one of those guys who are spreading that crap coughed on a bus driver and ran and did that to alot of ppl but they had no clue what he was doing? That would be messed up eh?

I think a death sentence or life in prison is pretty over the top, but what do you expect from China's government? They give the death sentence for many things.

Sell drugs in Australia? ok you go to jail for 5 or so years.
Sell drugs in China? ok you die now.

But the death penalty for rape is fully justified. It should be like that everywhere.

The country has what 1.2 billion people, thats almost 20% of the world's population. Try finding a better way to control a population that big yourself.

I think the key word is on purpose, look at it this way, out of a crowd of 1000 people 999 are wearing masks and one is without a mask couging on people, who do you think is going to get shot?

Listen fuckhead, it's called sarcasm. Quit getting your panties in a bunch.

When you think about the utter terror this germ has caused you can't say that this is over the top. It is an epidemic of deadly proportions and desperate times call for desperate measures. The lives of those that spread it willingly, or go about their daily business without regard for the rest of the people around them, (and the world if they are infected are causing more than likely the deaths or infection of 10 other people (probably less, but thats a good guestimate)) should be forfeit. That sort of reckless behaviour during a time when there is absolutely nothing that can be done against this germ, except for confinement/quarantine, is completely acceptable in my eyes, extreme, yes. But for the good of the entire human race.

I dont really care for the outbreak of an epidemic that could cause the deaths of millions upon millions of people. For those that think this kind of treatment is extreme, and I'm sure there are many, think about the alternative....I'll leave that up to you.

I say we lend a couple of nukes to some 3rd world countries and have them bomb China. That'll help with some of the SARS cases AND the population crisis. Hell, i think the rest of the world can find another place to manufacture toys and other products biggrin:

But think about it really, a Communist government of 1.3 billion wouldn't give a shit if they had to execute 10,000 people if it meant stopping the virus.

I don't think SARS is going to kill millions and millions because only something like 10% of cases are fatal and the only people really at risk are people over 60.

But in a way it is scary because this is a virus that could mutate into something deadlier. But from a virus' perspective if your host dies that's not good so I think it won't mutate.

As Stan's Father put it

"Go son, find the cure for SARS! Hurry, I only have a 98% chance of living! When you get back, only 98% of the town will still be here"

But of course, everyone knows the cure for SARS, its chicken soup, cough syrup, and Sprite

This disease has made me very sad. It's terrifying to see it coming into the US also. The world is changing, and so am I. oOo:
